Considering that concept cars are usually not fully analyzed and packed of futuristic gadgets hardly road tested for the purpose of making an impression at auto shows, I’d rather own a proven, planned trouble free production car. If that puts me in a very small group, what group is that?

Something the OP and others don't realize is the percentage of people who mod ANY car is very small. If your in a car forum you are in the minority of car owners. I would say even a small percentage of people on this forum actually mod.

The reason for me to mod, once I save enough lol, is to increase performance and be different from the other STOCK G37's in town. I want people to be like, "Hey, that's the G37 with them sick wheels and mean exhaust."

Good point, but my point is that the car can be improved, even Infiniti did it in the concept and that's all modders are doing... improving the car to our tastes. If you're that in love with a stock G then that's fine... one aspect of modding is to be unique so we're not necessarily looking for company, although it's always good to have another enthusiast to share ideas and experiences with.

I basically agree. But the theme of this thread seems to be that being unique has some pitfalls, i.e., entering the realm of bad taste and riceism (how’s that for a new word?). When that appears to happen then the rest of us, constrained to be in the same group, are unfairly affected.

I know it’s a stretch, but some observer who sees a G37 with some obscene body kit, a pink grill, loud exhausts and blacked out whatevers may say, “Look at that. Those G37 drivers are all alike.”

You see I would never want to be unique based on the automobile I drive. I find that superficial and misguided. I would rather it go unnoticed and have people assess me by my character and what I have or will accomplish. But that’s me.

Then by your last paragraph, you shouldn't have to worry about what others think of you based on their stereotypical judgment that all G drivers must be alike.

Maybe you mean that the riced out G37s may seem to lower the class and standard for car's image. But isn't trying to upkeep that image through someone else' perspective kind of superficial in itself?

All in all, I agree, except when I see the pink grill and pink wheels, I just chuckle because it's entertaining. And I think the "ricers" are typically a little younger than the rest of the owners (not that age has anything to do with it, of course)

People mod thier cars to improve performance and make it "thier own." It's some what of a hobby to them, and to meet others with the same interests who appriciate cars that are different. It doesn't have to be your cup of tea, but let it be others without saying you don't want to be judged by peoples' pride in thier customized car. My friends do not judge me for my car LMAO. Some can admire, some can frown. WHO CARES it's my cup of tea.

Even though it’s popular to say, “I don’t care what you or other people think.....,” it’s really a bit of nonsense. Of course we care. Why else would most of us take a shower every day or wear clean clothes? In that regard I wouldn't want people to say, “Look at Chekov; just another ricer. I thought he had more class than that.” If that’s superficial then I’m guilty. But I don’t think so.

But I agree with you that ricers may be a bit younger than the rest of us owners, and perhaps that suggests they have low self esteem and are just looking for someone to notice them; sort of like getting a pierced body part or tattoo. I would hope they grow out of it and move on to more important endeavors.

Wow. So are you suggesting that people with tattoos have "low self esteem"?
