The transmission doesn't upshift and stick at 4000rpm in DS mode

Greetings:

I just notice that in DS mode in my 09 G37x with 1000 miles on it, the transmission doesn't upshift even though I am already a hair above 4000rpm and at 90 mph. Is this normal?

Yes. DS Mode will keep the car higher in RPMs to keep the power at your disposal. If you want it to shift up and drop the RPMs, put it back into D mode and it will run at lower RPMs.

in DS, you need to downshift on your own with the shifter

are you saying that you ARE pressing down on the shift at 4000 rpms and is still is NOT downshifting at 4000rpms?

I believe the OP meant it doesn't upshift (vs. downshift). Depending on how you're driving in DS mode, the TCU will hold the gear through much higher RPM although you would think it would upshift if you back off the accelerator. I've noticed the same thing on occasion in DS mode myself.

It downshifts fine, it won't upshift so you can feel the sport... LOL

My apology for using the wrong terminology, I do mean "upshift" instead.

When in DS mode and start from a stopping point, the car upshift automatically as it reaches certain speed and rpm until it hit 4000 rpm at 90 mph. From this point on it doesn't seem to upshift to a higher gear and the engine sounds like it is in 5th gear. Since I haven't finished the 1200 miles break-in period, I am not sure if I can push the rpm higher to see if it will upshift or not. However I do try at ~4200 rpm for a short period and it still doesn't upshift.

That is the whole point of DS mode.

It holds higher RPM for quicker response when power is demanded by the driver

6th and 7th gear have nothing to do with Drive-"sport" ... just a couple overdrive gears...

just drive in D if you don't like how "DS" drives. it helps if you want to have fun on twisty roads to keep the rev's up without having the G downshift or upshift

DS helps when you want to pass some idiot going slow in the left lane with traffic on the highway too. I put it into DS when I am coming up on a gap in traffic in the right lane, then pass the moron, then go back to D when I am clear and just cruise until the next one.
