The DEFINITIVE oil thread
I did my first oil change was at 3500 miles using regular oil at the dealership. $50 buck with 5% discount. same here the oil is still not dirty...almost as good as new. 5000 mile interval synthetic oil change is reasonable the way i see it. definitely going with mobil 1 5w30 fully synthetic DIY route.
Spoke to my dealer last week about this, he asked what year car I had (2011) and said that for 2011 its not required. Assuming that he meant other years it might have been required, I checked the owners manual for 2010 and noted the same text as in the 2011 manual: Nissan suggests using <yada yada="">
One technical paper I found claims that ester-containing (1% by mass) PAO-base 5W30 oil combined with the non-hydrogenated DLC coating used in the VQ37VHR engine produces super low friction. The same low friction is not observed when using different DLC coating, or different oils (conventional or PAO without ester) with the same coating. From all reports, the Nissan Ester Oil is conventional oil with ester additive, so it's likely that it's the added ester not the base stock that makes the difference. Since the amount of friction without using ester-added oil is not higher than normal, I think it makes sense that Infiniti is not requiring but only recommending it.

Yeah the m1 thing surprises me too....i think the best m1 for our cars is the 0w40 but I don't want to run that while the car is under warranty.
I agree the ester thing is an additive not base stock...valvoline and pennzoil have said two of their products meet or exceed nissans requirement and those products are not ester based so it must be something in their additive packs

I've used the Nissan ester oil after the dealer ship service manager told me they had knocking problems with this engine in europe with non ester-oil products, but he wasn't for sure if this was accurate and I always take the dealership with ??.
