The DEFINITIVE oil thread
It would be a confusing poll if that were the case. I haven't put the same thing in twice! Most other threads get shut down quickly and directed here, but this list shows its age...
ok, so i'm new to the ownership list of the G37S. the only question i have is:
are there really any bad oils in this voting list? i am one of the 90% of the people who just take it somewhere (valvoline synpower). does it really matter? i mean i know the whole conventional/blend/synthetic arguments.
but do different brands match up against same type oils? is there really a difference?

Ive been using non synthetic oil until recently I drove across the country from Baltimore md to Los Angeles, when I arrived in la the first thing I wanted to do was get an oil change and a car wash, I took my car to project import in orange, Ca and they put in schaefers oil. I haven't done any oil analysis but the engine feels like it revs a little smoother, and idles smoother. They also had motul available, I think I paid 63.15 for schaefers and motul would have been $10 more. Cool shop, you can sit and play xbox look at tuner magazines, or watch them work on your car. Side note: 26 mpg on the way out with a full car that was loaded to the hilt, I found the best mpg was between 70-75 mph for me. I'm leaving from la going back to the baltimore area tomorrow, just got another oil change with schaefers and I'll try to use that if I can find it in the bmore area.

Was told by a dealer to use regular Mobile (Mobile Super?). If I do switch to synthetic, they have no problem with it, but I'll will not be able to switch back. For normal driving they see no reason to go synthetic and say regular Mobile oil does the job just fine. Plus they said with synthetic, they would still recommend regular change interval. What do you guys think? These guys seemed nice and knowledgeable, unlike my own dealership which tried telling me that for 2010+ G37 I have to use their "premium" service which uses synthetic...

Also that "engine seems to run smoother and rev better" feeling when you put fancy oil is 100% placebo.
Update: Just did first oil change at 2400 miles with Pennzoil Platinum. I went to my tuner shop and they confirmed their recommendation for a full synthetic on my car. They said that G37 engine has high tolerances and it's just a good idea to use oil with the best lubrication properties. They initially offered to use Mobile 1, but one of the guys said that he would prefer to use Pennzoil Platinum, because Mobile 1 is not the same formulation as it used to be and it lost some components that PP still has. I trust them and went ahead with Pennzoil Platinum. The only thing I'm thinking off is wouldn't Pennzoil Ultra be even a better choice. I payed the same amount as what they origianlly quoted me for Mobile 1 oil change.
Im about to do my 15k mile service and I was thinking of switching out to a different oil. Long story short, Im already getting a tick, mainly because they put in synthetic the first time, then ester, then "ester", but i think the dealership took my $120 and gave me synthetic. Now i have a tick at 14500miles.
Any suggestions as to what to do? Should I stick with Nissan Ester Oil? Switch to Mobil 1?
Also, Ive been using the OEM filter, so Im definitely switching outta that "fram" crap asap.

Then I read a few posts about Redline Synthetic, I am on my second oil change with Redline and there is no ticking noise. First interval I did 12000Km, just changed it last week. I am using Napa gold filter 1356 (longer version).
nissan ester had a really low viscosity... not to mention my iron counts were high for the last 25k miles... my oil changes never go over 2800 mi.
2 changes with mobile 1 brought metals down to normal wear
but my nickel levels are still detectable... it's actually gone up which has me a little worried.
