The DEFINITIVE oil thread
?
Had my car for 3 months (brand new) and plan to do oil changes every three months even though I don't drive it that much. My car isn't even broken in according to the factory manual (1050 miles). I plan to have more than 1200 miles on Oct 1 and will do my first oil change. It shouldn't hurt to do an oil and filter change at 1200 miles?...what do you all think.
I have been reading this thread and have been deliberating on OCI. My car is a weekend car so I won't be putting a lot of miles on it so I tentatively came up with every 3 months.
I also plan on doing a UOA on this oil change so I have a reference report.

They should show a drastic decrease for the first few changes, and eventually level off. Wear metals will never completely disappear, but the numbers should be single digit PPM, possibly in the low teens.
Most VQ37's seem to level off around 13-17k miles on the odometer.

Can you actually feel the difference ?
Can anyone actually feel the difference in (basic / Mobil 1 / Ester / Pennzoil etc)
in terms of Revving, Acceleration, Engine Noise, Smoothness or ride etc ?
Other than the supposed protection that better oils are supposed to offer,
is there anything you can notice thats different ?
Also, what brand of gasoline do you use ? I notice that if I use anything other than Chevron/Techron , my car's performance feels inadequate!

However, Performancewise, I also had my transmission reflashed so I noticed the smoother shifting when I picked up my car after switching oils, so I wasnt paying attention to the oil difference and I was mainly feeling the transmission.
The only thing you might see a difference in is mpg. Some people will notice maybe a 1 mpg difference when going from your basic conventional oil to something which lubricates better.
As for gasoline, I agree, I usually only put in Chevron or Shell VPower. I notice a tad more performance in the butt dyno and I tend to get 1 mpg better mileage.
I filled it before with Washingtonian, Sheetz, and 7-11 gas and it felt sluggish.
Just went Mobil 1 in my G37 and M45
My M45 has a new factory engine with about 3000 miles on it.It had an occasional momentary lifter tick, cold on start up and a slight shudder on slow take offs from a stop. This immediately disappeared. Wow huh?

Once people starting getting UOAs back on it, it was found to be otherwise.
Check out this thread It has UOAs for Mobil1 and others. Also checkout Bob is the Oil Guy

So, help me out
I've been reading, holy smokes and just want a definitive answer. What is the oil to use? Also, approximately what should the change intervals be? Just looking for a little help. Thanks guys!

As for what oil to use, there is no definitive answer. The Infiniti manual recommends specs. A basic API rated 5w30 conventional is fine to use per the manuals specs, just dont go over schedule 1, which is 3 months or 3750 miles with it.
Check through this thread and the blackstone thread. Platinum and Ultra both have good results and are API rated. Also, there are a few other high end non-api rated oils, such as Redline, which have shown good results in this car. Motul, 300v, RP, GC, etc all are good choices for extended OCI's.
In fact, if you want to, the Nissan Ester Oil is fine for schedule 1, but dont go more than 4k miles on it because it shears down to a 20 weight because its got weaker basestocks than the higher end synthetics.
Based on what oil you choose and how rigorous of a maintenance schedule you want to follow, choose schedule 1 or schedule 2. My rule of thumb, for conventional or Nissan ester, use schedule 1. For extended OCI's, use a higher end synthetic listed above.
Check the blackstone threads for UOA's on mileages and pick one that works for you.

I chose Pennzoil Ultra, and had two very good UOAs with it. I drive a lot, 500-600 miles a week, a lot of which is highway. I am changing my oil between 7000 and 7500 miles.
For me it is the answer. As Philter pointed out there are many other good choices too. If you want to change it every 3750 miles, you could probably use any quality oil.
