I friend of mine has a Porsche Macan. Every time i turn around he's dropping a couple grand on some mundane problem. The biggest problem, however, is that he bought a glorified VW crossover designed for a real houswife of wherever instead of an actual Porsche.

Don't buy German performance cars off warranty if you can't afford service

That's been conventional wisdom for the last couple decades, and where's there's smoke, there's fire.

As a toy, then whatever, because toy. But as a daily driver... no way.

E46 seems to be the last touted generation before things went to sh*t with them in terms of the icon they became as the E36. The E90 is my personal favorite of the BMW gens. I think they look extremely good and if it had an "M" badge, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interested. Anything less than that, I know what lies beneath...335 doesn't have me fooled.

Friend of mine owned one (E46 actually) in college and it ate him alive. Poor guy could barely feed himself (no pun intended). He loved that car and refused to let it go. Poor fool; definitely couldn't afford the service. My family owned a 325 and had two major mechanical failures before 70k miles. Those two together ended it for me. Family has had some luck with the MB lineup. Batting .750 thus far (3/4) with success and even with the one tht gave them issues - MB took care of them and extended the warranty two years past their final anticipated payoff date. On top of that they've gotten wine, souvenirs, coffee mugs, and MB does the pickups at their house so they never have to schedule to go to the dealership. Talk about red carpet treatment.

No Audi owners so I'm tempted to be the first. RS5 has a ton of appeal to me and I love the way they sound. C63 is a top 3 for my G replacement though.

My dad got an e350 cabrio as his old man car. No issues other than the germans try their hardest to make nothing on it user servicable...

my G will burn it down performance wise, but holy hell does that thing glide over the road.

Read those links before buying the MR. You want power gains? Reconsider. The dual clutch will grenade on you after 330whp. Gotta get it built then. It's a specialty transmission so make sure you find someone who knows what they're doing...The SST has come a long way in terms of aftermarket support but the Mitsu Evo X needs to have a correctly built one in order to make real power. If that's what you wanna do, get a GSR. Easier to build and can handle more power out of the box before a rebuild.

Interior is extremely aged. 90's rental car status. It's a rocket on wheels but after that, it's lacking in every category.

I didn't like the Q personally. It's taken the driving experience away in exchange for luxury and numbness. I've heard people saying the Black S Q50 is a blast though. Have you not considered the Q50 RS? If you're looking at Evo X MRs then the RS should be in your budget. Gets an additional 100+ horses and with a couple mods will throw down awesome power.
Thats what I actually been seeing and it's really drawing me back due to the transmission issues. I might just wait until the Q50 is more affordable because I really want a Silver Sport

Next car....?

I tend to keep cars for more than 10 years. I only drive about 3~4,000 miles a year, and I change all the fluids regularly, etc.

I'm 62, so I guess for my next car I will be, like, 73? The 2013 G37x sedan I bought 10/2016 will have about 80,000 miles on it in 2027 - in 10 years.... HAHAHAHA just getting broken in.

The problems I usually see when I am ready to finally replace a car are rusted bolts on suspension parts. Might need new sway bar or other parts because bushings have gone bad, but in previous cars I wasn't able to replace them because stuff like front-end subframes cracked when I tried to unbolt stuff. Midwestern winters / road salt take their toll.

But anyway what would I buy? I'm kind of torn. I like a reliable not-too-large car that is quick, handles sharply, has AWD for the snow here in Chicago, has classy good looks, a nice cabin. I don't do any track driving, it's not my thing. So far I really like my G37, but there are other cars to lust after. I like the recent Audi S4 and S5's, they are great driving cars, fast, and their interiors are fantastic. But I owned an Audi once and it was the absolute worst car I ever owned, everything broke, and Audi refused to fix anything under warranty. "Sue us" is what I heard from the dealer. So, regardless of how much I like their machines, my experience tells me to steer clear.

And BMW's- expensive and built to stay that way.

Lexus makes a very fine car although models to date have lacked character; future models may change that, but they tend to be more expensive than they ought to be because they are a Lexus. Still, I would look at what's available.

Mercedes, Porsche - see BMW, above.

Jaguar - since they've been owned by guys in India, they have come out with some really great vehicles, though reliability isn't there. My dad had an opinion on British-made cars: "Do not trust the British to properly build anything that is bigger than a hat."

Acura - I would certainly look at the upscale Hondas. They've had cars that appealed to me now and again, and their build quality and engineering is very good. Their interiors can be good, too.

Ford- well, I would look at some Ford products. They make some decent cars, and in ~10 years they might have some great stuff that I would like. I tend to think their interiors disappoint.

GM - I would look, but I've never been a fan of GM interiors.

Alfa ( Fiat / Chrysler) - Sei pazzo?

Tesla - sure, but who knows?

The truth is, in the years to come there will be many many things that will happen in the automotive world , impossible to predict and likely very impactful, such that it makes it impossible to predict what I would consider buying.

All I know is it will have to be RELIABLE, FAST, "NICE" in terms of ride and cabin and looks, and not TOO big. (I live in Chicago, and I'm used to driving a car that is about 70 inches wide. Any wider and I might freak out.)

I'm not sure that the GREAT USED CAR DEAL that my 2013 G37x represents will be out there in 2027. This may be the BEST CAR I'll ever own! If that's so, that is OK with me.

I started considering that exact question. After a few months I finally settled on an answer (and starting moving forward). The only thing that can replace my G are two things. An old pick up, and an older G/E46. I need a bit of versatility for fishing/outdoor-stuff, daily driving, and a little spicy driving. I'm thinking if I sell my current 2012 7AT sedan, I'd have enough for an 09 g37 MT coupe and an older 4x4 (70s fords and chevys are looking good).
Good plan?

certainly not a bad one...I'm a big proponent for having 2 cars that can do 2 different things.

What other costs are associated with it i.e. insurance, etc. I'm worried me being young and all I'd end up paying more.

If you get just basic liability on the old truck your insurance shouldn't go up a whole lot unless you already have a spotty driving record.

Welcome to the site BTW!

Thanks! I've been lurking for too long.

Yeah that's the hope, I'm pretty much set on it, already found a truck on craigslist and a pretty clean 08 (also spotted a tempting S2k but not tempting enough!). I gave my insurance agent a call and he gave me a relatively decent quote. The truck would count as a classic so really cheap taxes/inspection/fees, etc.
All I need is a buyer for my G and I'm set.

I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready to replace the G my kid(s) will be able to do forward facing seats. For what I want- really no substitutes- 997 C2S

Window of affordability on 996/997s is closing and I really hate the 996 interior. It will be then or probably never. If not that, probably an M240i or at worst a GTI Sport.

I'm honestly thinking about either a Q70 Sport

or a F10 BMW M5.

I don't buy new for myself and I'm not really enough of a Q50 fan to go that route. My main gripe about Infiniti is the lack of interior color choices. Lexus for example has a few nice choices. BMW as well. Most of the higher end car companies do, but Infiniti only offers Graphite, Stone and Wheat! I really miss driving my Bimmers. This handles similarly, but definitely does not have the polish and finish the Euros offer.
