I have like 200K miles on my sedan, should I be using other oils other than M1 5w30EP? I’ve heard some people saying they’ve been using 0w40 in their G’s as well and was wondering should I be doing the same.

 

There is no need to switch to a different grade of oil. If 5W30 worked well for the first 200,000 miles, it will work well for the next 200,000.

Do you remember when each step up in octane, regular to plus to premium was only 10 cents per jump? Now it's huge jumps. It's not like gas was that much cheaper either (like the percent of increase was similar to the cheaper price). It's seems a scam that now, as more cars seem to require higher octane, that higher octane has gotten so much $$$. Read a few posts on bobistheoilguy where people who knew tank delivery drivers to stations said the difference was that they poured in an additive package to each of the higher octane underground tanks after filling, not that each had to be refined differently That was years ago tho.

Capitalism. If there is an opportunity for a business to maximize profits, then screw the consumer until sales volume drops. I also remember there being roughly only 10-20 cents difference between regular and premium gas. The good news is that the cost of a barrel of oil is now actually less than zero. However, there are still refining and transportation costs as well as taxes so gas will not be free, but this will be as close as we get.

 

How is that good news?

 

Because gas is ridiculously cheap. How is that bad news?

Inexpensive gasoline is always a welcome thing. More so if you burn through so much that you feel in in your household budget. However, if there's one thing that threads its way inextricably through the world economy, it's fossil fuels. And while it doesn't have to be that way, it is what it is, and the only stable way to wean off it is through gradual legislative initiatives, market-driven alternatives, science and education. Simply causing the industry to collapse all at once... that would be immeasurably bad.

So... you're both right. Cheap gas... Yay! But the "cost" of that temporary cheap gas could be felt for a generation.

I am serious. How can you be serious about wanting to pay more for gas??

 

Because I grasp fiance and economics.

Selling something for less the the cost of production isn't sustainable, and it's absolutely terrible for the domestic oil industry.

I grasp finance and economics just fine. I was obviously talking about the simple immediate benefit to the consumer.
