Wonderful that you respect the car. I didn't have a party in it, I just drove the car to the limits. My car I drive a little more sensible because I don't want to rag it out. On the Loaner Car, it is non American not to drive the heck out of it. Don't confuse ABUSE with driving it HARD. It's like when you have a girlfriend (I'm married, BUT just for illistrative Purposes) and then you meet a girl that you are never going to see again and you treat her very nice, but when the time comes to go for a "drive", you really let her have it, no Rusty Trombones or anything carzy, but maybe just a variation of the good ol' trusty "WheelBarrol"

When your done, everyone goes home in one piece, and with their respect in tact, but, you just walk with a little more of a spring in your step for a day or two and then your back to your good old self.

That was a LONG Stretch, and a roundabout way of explaining it, but I hope you get the point. I respect peoples things too, but getting a little heavy on the gas isn't going to land you in San Quinton or anything.

I can't really understand why people enjoy trashing loaners, I try to respect any car I'm driving. People complain when the dealers don't offer them loaners, but think it's just fine to have a free-for-all in the thing. Oh well, just my 2c's [/quote]

OK, now back to 7 Speed Transmissions. I JUST got my 2009 G37 Sedan Back an hour ago from the Dealer and had the 7-Speed Re-Program performed (Along with the 2011-2012 Navigation Update I purchased for $99 and the dealer charged me $109 to install ).

To refresh your memory, since this posts is super LONG, I was given a 2012 LOANER CAR. It was nice, BUT Shifted VERY SMOOTH shifting and didn't FEEL as fast or fun to drive as my 2009 (For sure!). I noticed this right away. Now also it's important to note, I've had this car 4 weeks, so not a lot of drive time on her yet.
were very smooth, the 1-2 shift was like Butter. To be honest, my initial impression was that I LIKED the 2009 BETTER Before.

It was behaving just like my 2012 Loaner car I had for a day and a half. Probabaly has the same program????????? Again, this was a short drive home 930 miles) and my G still had power, BUT, the overall charateristics of the transmission just seemed much more refined and not near as AGGRESSIVE!

My 30 minutes drive so far hasn't blew my socks off. Again, I still wanted it because I wanted the latest and greatest and read many good reviews, but the MAIN THING I feel, is it is smoother and NOT as AGGRESSIVE. It downshifted hard before and threw me back in my seat. It still goes fast, but just feels more Like a Cadilac than the Car I just had been driving the last 4 weeks. Maybe it gets better, but that is my QUICK INITIAL impressions. Anyone else agree?

So you drove the loaner harder than you would your own, because it might "rag it out". But it's ok because you're not going to get in trouble for it.

That hardly makes you a bad person, but it's pretty much exactly what we were talking about.

OK,then I'm guilty. Not a big deal and I don't feel the least bit bad about it at all. If I get another Loaner, I will also haul *** in it and have fun, within respectable limitis.

Here is a question for you: Would YOU want to buy a rental car from Hertz, Avis, etc?
Most wouldn't! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, wonder why???

Maybe it's because usually people beat the $#@! out of them. Just a guess though, as no one probably knows this little known fact

OK, I'm done. Back to the Tranny! Drove mine again tonight. LOVE the LED Lights I installed and the back ups. the tranny felt nice, but the thing I noticed AGAIN, was on intial take off, the 1-2 shift is super smooth, where as before, it really snapped your neck. Oh well, maybe overall it will be better on the car and will imrove overall ride quality across the board, and you alsways have DS if you want to get crazy.

Well my 2012 G37S coupe 7AT at times shifts like ****. In the manual mode, I can watch it shift down on it's own even though I haven't asked it to, and twice on the track I've watched it upshift from 4th to 5th down the front straight. Again this is in the manual mode. It's acting more like it's in the "D" mode. Don't like this since I bought the automatic, from a road test car, which didn't show any of these traits. I've also had upshift over-run when going from 3rd. to 4th at around 5K rpm and it shifted up and the rpm jumped 250 rpm up before coming down when 4th gear finally caught. This happens only intermittently. My biggest complaint is that it downshifts in the middle of braking when I don't ask it to and then I hit the down paddle either once or twice for the corner and all of a sudden I'm one gear too low and almost on the redline. Not cool. Again it doesn't always do this so you never really know unless your looking at the dash instead of the road. Any help here?

IMO getting a loaner is a privilege, if you don't feel bad about it who cares what others think right??

g37guy, agreed. Drive in DS mode once in awhile. It's been neutered {De-Balled}, less harsh downshifts BUT also less aggressive. It appears to have been done so the reprogramming would allow for the better D mode drive, AND ALL DONE IN THE INTERESTS OF KEEPING THE MPGs UP....Unscientifically, solely by eye so to speak, I think I'm getting about .5 more MPG since the reflash. I think the only remaining "problem" is that she shifts into to too high a gear to quickly; the downshifts are better & quicker when coasting & turning {thereby reducing the Lag}, but the torque converter locks up too easily. It's about the Balance that Infiniti is seeking between response, mileage, and driveability. I have not driven the BMW or Chrysler 8 AT, to make that comparison, others have sworn that VW's new Tranny is the Best in the Business.

Additional note, I had a G25X as a Loaner this week. As a test drive (No, I didn't beat it Up b/c it was Loaner), I used DS & manual mode. That car seemed to Love 4th gear. My 07 G35X loved 3rd & 4th gears. Since I had it for 2 days, I milked the ride home - reset the MPG meter, got about 25.6 mpg in a 30/70 City/Highway ride with a little traffic on a 45 mile trip. I don't think I would opt for a 2012 G25X. It had some real Lag / hesitation when trying to go from 20 -25 mph and stepping on it. I'm also used to my 3.7 engine. With not a signnificant difference in mileage, Don't Know what Infiniti was thinking with the G25....Oh yeah I forgot: It's about the Overall MPGs in the fleet.

After the reflash, my trans seems to hold the gears longer, especially 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 shifts, which I'm happy about. Before it would go from 1 to 2 too quickly and would feel like it went from 2 to 4 under light acceleration and then go into 5 or 6 quickly. If I would give it more gas, it would try to go first in the gear it was in and bog a little, then realize that it needed to shift down a gear or two.

Now the car seems to hold the low gears longer, and in the higher gears, adding "a little" gas causes an instantaneous down shift instead of: thinking, bogging, thinking, downshifting, accelerating.

For me, the shift points and down shift improvements makes the car run effortlessly and I have to pay closer attention to the speedo.

Right! Again, I didn't BEAT up the Car, even filled with Premium Gas and cleaned spots off it. Just hauled some A$$>>>>>. Geeez guys, I don't want to be hated or anything, I was just standing up and taking responsibility for how I drove the car and don't think I did anything that bad.

I am not going to say I'm sorry for driving as loaner car harder than I drive my own. Now if you want to hear a really Bad Story. I think it was on you tube. Some kids got a regular american rental car and put on NITROUS for the day. Now that is beating the $%^& out of a Car!

Here are the dip#$%#s in action:

I wonder if the change is instant, or the car learns anything over a period of time. My guess would be it is instant, since I understand programming and shift points a little from all the programming done on My Vette.

It is all based on tables for speeds, % of throttle position, and other algorithms. I need a little more window time to see how it behaves, but, so far, just feels less aggressive. I am TORN a little, and almost wish I never got the reprogram done!

Just throwing this out there, BUT, can you ever go back? Is there a way to but it back to how you used to have it? I assume NOT? I am sure there IS A WAY to do it if someone REALLY Wanted to. Just would need the previous tranny program.

Almatti,

I think you are 100% correct in your observation that Infiniti tried to find the right point on the three-way graph of: response, mileage, and driveability. Coupled that with adaptive learning results in inconsistent responses of the tranny for given inputs (ie brake and accelerator)

Adaptive learning was the downfall. Doing a web search for transmisison adaptive learning brings up some interesting information. Here is one link (2007), but there is a bunch of links, all seem to concur adaptive learning basically stinks:

I think driving a car in daily use is far too random for adaptive learning to be useful.
I'm not going around a track trying to improve my time while maintaining the same line, speed, braking etc.
Just wish there was an "off" switch for it. Then I'D learn how to drive the car instead of vice versa.

Seems they're trying to please everyone. And that NEVER goes well.

It's interesting that the article focuses on Subaru's adaptive ECU, which is quite good and adapts very quickly to changes in driving style in my opinion/experience. I had a Legacy H6 4AT followed by two Legacy GT Limited 5EAT models. In the GTs they had more to adapt with: both the trans and the turbo.

I say "had" because they quit making GTs with automatics, which is why I drive a G37x now.

I have an appointment tomorrow for my 2009 G37x Sedan. Did you guys specifically request the TSB flash or just describe the symptoms. I know some dealers are hesitant to do the update.
