Oil Change . . . how often?

One thing the DIY crowd might consider is an oil siphoner (sp?).

A buddy of mine uses one on his BMW M3 and swears by it. No crawling under the car to drain the oil. His oil filter can be accessed from the top of the engine bay, though.

Not sure what they cost.

yes bmw uses the paper refill filters. You just unscrew the cap and pull the paper one out and place the new one in. most Euro cars use this system
