Time for the 1st oil change?

My '06 G35x is now just shy of 6 weeks old and passed the 1200 mile "break in" period last week (short commute ). If I recall correctly (need to go Read The Fine Manual), 1st oil change is at 3 months/5k miles.

So should I wait for late March/early April (3 mo) or change the oil now?

Also, what about switching to synthetic? Yes/No, When, What?

Debating if I want to go "play in the snow" later or whimp out and take my wife's SUV.

You're fine waiting for the first oil change.
You'll always find people for and against synthetic. My spin is if you drive conservativly and plan on doing frequent changes stick with traditional oil. If you push your car a little harder and/or want to go a little longer between changes without worry go with synth.

From what I've heard the G35xs AWD is a bit rear biased. This is defintily better for dry, its better than RWD in the wet stuff, but I'd still prefer something with closer to a 50/50 for snow or maybe even a little biased towards the front.
That said, if you ever plan on driving it in the snow its always good to know what it'll do. If you can find a safe enviornment to test its handling, I say go for it.

Well, my wonderful wife (she is wonderful because SHE decided I'd be driving a G35x vs, say a Subaru (great snow car, though)) left a little while ago with the XL7, and I have to go drive my son & his friends to another friends' house, so it looks like we'll get some 1st-hand experience on the [currently] wet but bare pavement (this 10" and blizzards forecast was obviously paid for by Home Depot and Lowes - is this how NOAA's covering the NWS budget?).

I used to drive an RX-7 in New England winters, so not expecting any problems before we get to the 5-6" unplowed stage. Now the nuts in the SUVs who thin 4WD means 4W *brakes* are another matter entirely...

Thanks for the tip on the oil and the RWD bias.

No, if you drive like most people do, or if you punch the pedal every now and then.

Yes, if your oil temperature is put to extremes, 300+ or below zero. So, if you're racing around a track, moving to Alaska, or if you just consider speed limit signs to be suggestions, then go synthetic. Or if you just like spending more money so you can feel as though you're only giving your car the best.

Thanks for the tips on oil - think I'll stick with regular and stay on top of the changes.

Oh, wimped out on playing in the snow with the G35 - it stayed in the garage. Instead, took my son out into the cul-de-sac, put my wife's XL7 into 2WD and had him practice getting into and out of skids. (I think he was enjoying doing near 360-s a bit too much! )
