troubleshooting nightmare - is this normal for a cv axle?
Hey all,
Long time lurker looking for some additional opinions and information from the knowledgeable folks here. One of my G37X Sedans has been experiencing some pretty harsh vibrations and shaking at highway speeds. This 2011 G in particular has just a hair under 200k on it, so it has seen its fair share of use over the years. I'm by no means a professional mechanic, but I'd like to think I'm semi-competent with vehicle maintenance and repair.
I believe I've done my due diligence in attempting to troubleshoot the issue, to no avail. The items I tackled over the last several months, which typically show up as the cause of highway speed vibrations, are as follows (all parts replaced with OEM from Nissan):
Replaced both front lower control arms
Replaced both front outer tie rod ends
Replaced both front sway bar end links
Replaced both front hub and bearing assemblies
Replaced all 4 rotors, pads, and calipers
New tires
Balance, rotation, and alignment
None of these have seemed to make any difference, and the issue has only gotten worse.
Now to my actual main question. I was just inspecting the front end again for the 100th time and noticed that the passenger side CV axle has some play that seems unusual. The axle housing where it connects to the front differential can be moved side to side and up and down with a fair amount of ease. I can't imagine that's by design, but I could be wrong. Checking the driver side axle, I was not able to replicate that motion, it felt very sturdy (outside of the expected slight in-and-out play).
Is this an indication that I may have potentially found the cause I've been chasing, or is some play expected?
Thanks!
