TL;DR: I think my front driver drain is totally blocked somehow (near the inlet/within the channel that surrounds the sunroof), which with enough rain, causes water to pool and overflow into the top of the headliner (and subsequently down the drivers A pillar).

Does this theory hold water (pun intended)? If so, anyone have tips on how to resolve??

Evidence as follows:

Exhibit C I poured water into the sunroof channel, and the water did not drain down into the A pillar (it did so on the passenger side, and went all the down down thru the passenger footwell)!! I also noticed that the foam between the channel and the headliner was damp !

Exhibit D what I believe is going on to cause the cabin leak (which runs down the A pillar and all the way down to the driver footwell). Could this be possible? Any thoughts on fixes ?.
Update on this (in case anyone else runs into a wet A pillar): I tested all 4 drains along the sunroof drain “channel” and I found that the front-driver side drain was clogged entirely. So that was pretty conclusively the culprit. So pretty sure I nailed it with the diagrams above.

How did I clear said clog? I just unbent a heavy-duty paper clip, and poked around in the corner of the sunroof channel, until I felt the paper lip sliding down into an inlet/drain hole. Really had no idea what I was doing, it’s difficult to see how the water drains out of that channel. But once the paper clip found a hole, I jostled it a bit and now that inlet properly drains (was able to confirm by watching water run down thru drain tube within the A pillar).

So one more battle won against the sunroof drainage system…

So the difficult to see metal/plastic nipple that is located on the top left under the sunroof assembly which connects to the hose is what was clogged?

Yep! I was able to drop the headliner to see how and where the drain tube connects to the sunroof assembly. But for the life of me, I couldn’t get a visual on how the water actually makes it to that connect.

So I basically just poked around til I felt something. And when I did, I gave it a few swirls to clear out whatever gunk was in there that was causing water to pool up. After that, I poured some water down that side of the sunroof assembly and it successfully drained

The black hole is somewhere down here

I drove my car on some errands this weekend, while the roads were dry, and before the storm rolled in on Sunday. Probably been 3-4 weeks since I last pulled it out of the garage, so it felt like an event, even if all I was doing was driving to Lowes.

There's something about below freezing temps on a NA car tuned for performance... the throttle is so snappy, and the pull under load is such a rush. Granted, I'm on snow tires so there's not a lot of point to hard launches unless I want to hear the tires squeal and the traction control hold me back, but it still brings a smile.

I'm envious. I wanted to get mine out and about but all I ended up doing is putting the car cover on it - we're expecting 7"+ snow. While in the scheme of things that's just called 'winter', here in South Carolina - especially on the coast - it's the end of the world. Thankfully we got our bread and milk last week LOL (and eggs, nutmeg, and cinnamon) so we can make French toast. That's why those things always sell out before a storm, no? Right?

For Xmas I got my self some more carbon hydrodipped interior trim from the place that did the LCD surround, but just opening the boxes this weekend looks like I may have goofed and gotten Coupe versions. Hopefully they'll trade me out otherwise... for sale thread for those

Non-car news, the wife was part of December's Boeing layoffs so for a while no car mod budget (or anything budget, which was a shame I had several marksmanship competitions lined up this year) until we figure out health insurance.

7" snow in SC? Yeah, I'd call that the end of the world. Here in Western NY it's just another Tuesday. Well, historically that's been the case, but this year is weird. Yesterday was the first time I had to drag out the snow blower.

Sorry about your wife's job. It really sucks to start the new year that way. I hope things turn around for you guys.

Thanks John. She was contemplating quitting end-of-year anyway, given the current state of Boeing. She's been there 17 years and has essentially watched it go to poo. The door blow out wasn't an accident - it's indicative of the revised (cheaper) safety rules and the systemic focus on profit over, well, building safe airplanes. In the USAF, that door would have been physically touched/checked by 4 different increasing levels of technical supervision/quality control before being signed off. They had just the mechanic sign his own work.

So... yeah. This way she gets severance until June. That's nice. I'm only minorly worried about health care for me - I can/do go to the VA, and the VA has my expensive diabeetus meds on the formulary so as long as the VA isn't killed by the current admin, I'm OK. But her and my kid need something, and the Boeing insurance was what kept her there the last 4-5 years TBH.

Change is constant. Chaos can be a good thing, but you can only ride the wave, not control it.

I had to drive to Lancaster from Toronto in 0ºF today and yeah it feels very different. Hopefully the Buffalo lake effect snow doesn't kill me on the way back lol.

On another note, my friend in New Orleans says they got snow for the first time in 80 years or something and everything came to a stop.

I'm also doing the daily commute in the G37 in the cold. This morning was 3°F when I left the house, so thankful for heated seats.

A slight segue - My winter project is refinishing these wheels. ...(I know another set of OEM wheels)... but I now have a full square set of rear 350Z Rays Track Wheels 18"x 8.5", and just 18.2 lbs each. I plan to go with a bronze powder coat after fixing the curb rash and dent. It's something to keep me busy in the WARM garage waiting for spring. These will be for my S14, now that I'm using it's former wheels on my G37. Hope you all are finding ways to enjoy this cold.

In a rare storm, this morning I'm at 5-6" of snow and, gasp, 15 degrees. Warm butt and (for me) warm hands... Makes driving in this crappy weather tolerable.

Plenty of coffee and booze to last quite a while. Or, at least until this crap melts lol.

We're cut off from the main roads (no plows in Charleston SC) but good for a week or so before I'd need to seek out resupply.

Having said that, my wife needs to be in Atlanta Saturday morning for a funeral; although the Q5 is likely to handle this better than anything we've owned before it is the others on the roads that I'm concerned about. Yesterday we had I26 (road crossing all of SC) blocked by a semi turned fully sideways, and I95 blocked by a similar accident.

Same here. The main roadway is closed and knowing DOT they'll wait until it melts and then they'll send whatever "plows" they have. DOT here is notoriously "day late and dollar short."

Final total for my yard was about 6-1/2"

Needless to say neither the G nor Zed/4 are going anywhere anytime soon...

And to think I left NY to get away from this crap...

^^^That's a cool pic.

As we witness climate change during our lifetime, I'm still in disbelief for what's come of my little corner, here on the southern coast of Lake Ontario. Buffalo and Syracuse continue to get hit with overwhelming Lake Effect snow, as does the Southern Tier and Northern NY. But for some reason our winters here in Rochester have entered into some kind of Goldilocks Zone. It's just feeling, right or wrong. We still get cold and snow, just not at historic levels anymore.

No complaints here. I've used the snow blower once this year. So far.

My inlaws live in a pocket valley in North Carolina. It has its own weather patterns LOL - it can be just cold outside the vale and snow inside, or vice versa. We evac there for hurricanes because even when the outside is getting historic rainfall and winds, they get nothing.

Here's yesterday. I'm still in PJs today working from home (oops left webcam at work, can't have video feed)...

While we're sharing pictures, is there a plugin for the forum that would add support for heic files?
