Sooooooo many posts on the subject ....

RWD G in snow stock tires = no no
RWD G with winter tires (aka snow) = good
AWD G with stock tires = better
AWD G with winter tires = best

I live in MD and we put Blizzaks on our RWD and don't drive it if there is a good chance of snow. Have the M37x for mild snows and an Xterra for the fun stuff.

I would get the x myself.

With the VDC off you'll get some car burning in a ditch.

I think you're undermining the importance of good rubber. I would change the center two:
RWD G in snow with A/S tires = no no
AWD G in snow with A/S tires = ok
RWD G with winter tires = good
AWD G with winter tires = better

(I changed the stock tires to A/S, as I'm guessing in southern states they are sold with 3 season tires.)

The stock A/S tires on my AWD performed poor, so with the AWD it was barely acceptable, but I drive mountain passes in heavy storms, so my needs are extreme. I had to keep the speeds way way down compared to how I like to drive an AWD with winter tires, power sliding speeding through the turns. Upper-rated winter tires available are incredible. Studs suck, but the high-tech tread compounds stick like crazy. I had to change out a set of tires on my WRX, as I couldn't break them loose in the corners, even at higher speeds.

I just ordered the Xice3's from the Tire Rack, $70 off a set promotion. The Xice2 were the super sticky ones I didn't like on the Subaru, but the g's tires are way wider, and the cars weigh about the same, so I'm hoping it will give me the right amount of stick I'm looking for. Even though they're a winter tire, they're still H-rated. What sold me is there's a 40k warranty unheard of on snow tires. Michelin claims it's a new tread compound that gets firmer in warm weather and supposedly they save on gas too. A lot of consumer reviews touted both their ice ability, and their performance as well. Even people that drive a lot will get four seasons on them. On the tire rack, if you click read all reviews, you then can view them by Manufacturer, so there was a bunch of G owners on there.

For the absolute most stick, although it's probably overkill, the tire rack sells 17" rims that fit if you don't have the Okebono's, Narrower taller tires will always do the best. Most drivers won't want to run these on their G both for looks and dry days, but if you're in heavy daily snowy conditions, you may want to consider it.

I've been a big proponent of winter tires for years. It can make the driving difference of either fearing for your life, or having a blast in the snow. Why white-knuckle it when you can grin through it? AWD and especially 4WD gives drivers a false sense of security. I commuted about 50 miles up I-70 and over Loveland pass, the highest pass of the continental divide, and the highest pass open in the winter in the US, at 12,000ft passing through 3 ski areas. In the 5 years I commuted there, I saw 100's of flipped vehicles. 80% were 4WD SUV's and Trucks, but I even saw a bunch of subies that had flipped as well. And although Loveland Pass is a steep narrow winding mountain road with hairpin turns, almost all the vehicles had flipped on I-70 due not only to much higher speeds and icier conditions, but the fear and respect felt on the pass would make most drivers use extreme caution. Most people think that AWD vehicles negate the need for winter tires; they are completely wrong and oblivious to physics. This false sense of security causes a disproportional number of 4WD and AWD vehicles to land in the ditch. Certainly if you don't encounter too much snow, are willing to slow way down, and you don't travel at the worst of conditions you can get away with an AWD with good A/S tires, but with the wide tires on the G, don't get too confident. Even down on the flats, newly paved roads with other driver's skidding to a stop creates ice rinks at the stoplights.

Spend a bunch of time reviewing tires. The tire rack's site has an incredible amount of information and reviews. The best A/S tires can be as good as some of the poorer winter tires, but some are not any better than summer tires. There's also a great deal of quality and performance variance within winter tires too. Sometimes I can find a better deal than tire rack (but not often), but no matter wherever I buy my tires from, the best informational source to choose the tires is on tire rack's website.

Once I get the tires on and have blasted through the snow over the pass, I'll write a review on the Xice3's.

Oh, and while burning rubber is stupid and expensive, spinning the wheels and power sliding through the turns on ice is a blast and it isn't bad for your tires. My rule has always been when the snow covers the double yellow line, it's a passing zone.
