I'm at 31k miles and I think its time to change the tranny and diff fluids. I would like to bring it to the dealer but the closest one is 3 hr drive. So one of my option is to bring it to shop in town (certified GM service center). My plan is to buy all the fluids and have them change it. Would anyone trust a Mr. Goodwretch to perform this service on there car?

Good call! So when does the tranny fluid need to be changed? And will the same diff fluid changing tutorial will work on my X but I just need to do it to my front diff too right?

 

I am wondering the same thing, I work for acura and we sell tranny service every 15k-30k miles. Why does it say not to service the 7at transmission??

 

pumping in tranny fluid is a PAIN IN THE ***. if i didn't already have the pump, i'd take to a mechanic. it's almost impossible to overfill either the diff of the transmission, but i'm sure it's possible in the wrong hands. if you'd like to give it a shot...go for it. it's relatively easy, but MESSY!

 

What about the transfer case? does that fluid need to be changed too?

 

The 7AT fluid change situation is weird. In the FSM it says in one place that it does not require changing as a maintenance item, but in the maintenance section there's a procedure for doing it. IIRC, it's drain, fill, drain, fill, drain, fill. Takes some special tools or a McGyverish streak.

 

where is the fill plug on the 7at trans, the service manual shows it on the bottom of the pan, how the hell does that work?, is it a one way valve ?, i would think it would be higher up on the trans like the rear diff fill hole, maybe the tube goes up inside the trans and can only come out when it gets to the top of the tube, anyone know, thanks

 

there are two plugs a fill and a drain. the drain is lower as the pan is molded upward.

checking the fluid is a pain in the *** in itself.
