Likely fix for windshield popping/squeeking noise....!

Hey guys,

I know there's a huge thread about the windshield popping noise but I think I found a dealer fix for it.

As some of you may know, I've been dealing with the pops since I bought my G37S last february. It went away in the warmer months but it came back with a vengeance just recently since it had gotten colder.

The symptoms seem to worsen with cold weather and the noise it makes range from pops to squeeks. The sound goes away when it rains - presumably because the water dampens the source outside the car (see below).

I brought the car to my dealer approximately 4 times, and only today were we able to reliably replicate the sound. We found out that the item making the noise was the "windshield cowl". We could press on the cowl and the squeeks and pops would be heard in the cabin!

The "windshield cowl" is the plastic that the windshielf literally sits on at the bottom of the windscreen. The best way to see the entire assembly is to pop the hood and the ENTIRE plastic assembly beneath the windshield is the COWL.

The dealer took the cowl apart and found that it was dirty and the rubber had dried considerably. They cleaned it AND placed silicone lubricant compound all over the rubber and the cowl assembly.

Viola!!!

NO MORE NOISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Now I feel like I'm actually driving a $40,000 coupe!!)

Yeah, I really hope this helps a LOT of people because I know I'm not the only one with this problem.

It sucks because it really dumbed down my enthusiasm for my car especially because it sounded like a Kia only $40K in cost.

I'm glad to report that after 12 hours, my car is still squeek and pop free. My dealer told me to come back anytime it comes back and they will re-grease it if they have to. They did mention that the silicon agent they used was water-proof so it shouldn't return.

It's the cowl, people!

That's good to know. I haven't had any of the sqeeks/pops, but if I do start hearing them I'll know how to fix it.

Thanks Joey, this is exactly what is happening right now. I'm in Northern Cali and it's been raining and fairly cold here this winter. It started making this squeeking sound once it got really cold.

I'll let my dealership know on my appt.

Thank you, i was almost to the point to find it , few days ago, There is a kind of rubber at this place where the hood is sitting when is closed, i noticed it wasn't tight enough. But the noise was still there, may be less...
Can we put silicone by ourself, can you be more precise, where to put the silicone grease ?

Thanks a lot again

Anyone have a popping sounds when the windshield wipers are swinging, when they come down to horizontal level, they make a loud pop.
