The only maintenance I do to the roof is treat the rubber seals with ShinEtsu lubricant (really all the rubber seals) every 3 months or so. The roof uses a "special" type of bearing at the pivot points (hinges) and BMW "strongly urges" people to leave them alone. Online it seems that any lubricants (like WD40, white lithium or silicone sprays ) actually cause more harm than good.
Keep in mind, though, that while similar, the roof on the G is more complex than on the Zed/4. Same designer and manufacturer but more involved. The factory manual (section RF) should have some pointers on maintenance items.

There are a few options for the G. I'm sure you'll find one that will work for you and get it installed when the time is right (or when wifey insists). I ended finding a "open box" Pemp Android unit for the BMW on eBay that, surprisingly, works very well though my needs are simple when it comes to AV.
