I have to tell you, it is real tempting to get that done to mine!. I saw the picture of it below your display panel between the tach and speedo,. Can you get to the buttons on that one? I have the x50 so am not sure where the buttons are on the newer model.

The control is seperate and is mounted just above the ash try. It is visible in another picture. All of the buttons are easily reached. I drive with my hand on the shift **** (even though it's an auto) and it is within reach without moving my hand from its resting place.

The display is actually in the instrument cluster so there's no reaching that.

Heres the link:Controller Picture

I asked for a lot of input and got some good help:

That is the nicest radar detector install I have ever seen. Plus, you have the unit which does the GPS update which helps a lot. I assume it is just one button to dim the display in case you get puled over?

It turns off all together at the touch of a button. It's also completely passsive so no detector-detector worries.

Here are a couple of pics of my Passport SRX install. The radar sensor is mounted dead center behind the honeycomb grill(sorry for the bluriness, took these at night).

Mounted the stealth led under the hood for the screen. It stays green when nothings around, then flashes red(variable depending on strength) when it senses radar or laser.

The control unit mounted in the top of the glove box.

Just a few side notes. Theres a mute button mounted inside the ashtray, there is a speaker mounted and hidden under the glove box, and I haven't mounted the front and rear laser diffusers yet as I have to order a new front grill to cut in the units as they would look like *** otherwise. The performance of this one is above the 8500/9500i. It is above a grand for the unit and the install won't be cheep, but its worth it if you want the clean looks and great performance.

I grabbed power of the cig socket. Its a switched power so not big deal. Other then that I would go to the fuse box with a fuse tap and an additional fuse.

I am getting my x50 mounted under the hood and the having and LED added. I am getting with someone who is the electronic guru for these type of things in my area. I am leasing the car so I dont want to do anything too extensive but I need the detector hidden.

That may not be the best idea as the x50 is not waterproof. In order for it to "see", the sensors have to have the least obstructions as possable.

The person who will be doing this is supposedly very good and he said he adds some parts. I do not know the whole story yet. I am going to stop by his shop this week or next week when I get a chance and he is going to show me what he can do and other options.

I will let you know once I find out the exact details. I never thought about it not being waterproof. I will run his suggestion by you guys first if you dont mind once I talk to him in person.

ya i have the 8500 x50 with the ZR3 laser shifter package. I set the two front shifters inside the front upper grill and the one rear goes above the plate. the detector is above the rear view mirror wired through the roof
