I've been thinking about this for a while:
Why would a tire store accept me buying tires from Tirerack, delivering them
to their store, and paying them their normal fee to mount and balance, when they make no profit on tire sales??
What is their incentive to treat me the same as a buying customer?

I actually did this. I bought tires for my Xterra from TireRack, then took them to Walmart for mounting/balancing. They charged me some nominal fee--wasn't a big deal. Definitely worth the convenience.

Our installers are happy to receive the labor business when a customer of ours has tires shipped there. Also helps open the door to other services such as alignments, engine work, etc that may help you build a long term relationship with a reliable shop.
