Yes this is being blown out of proportion.

A TSB is NOT a recall. It's the factory assisting the dealerships on handling certain repairs.

This one most likely is the factory asking that cases of oil consumption not be repaired
at the dealership, but rather to return the engine to the factory for disassembly and diagnosis.
This helps the manufacturing process, this style VVEL motor will be in production a few more years.

doesnt seem blown out of proportion to those affected by this-including myself....ive owned lots of cars in my lifetime and have had to fight tooth and nail with dealerships to get the most minute things done to my cars and now, im told im getting a new motor without any "fight" from my end.....this problem is bigger than you may think. Not everyone is vigilant in checking their oil levels regularily.....ppl think "new car...under warranty...no worries..." For all they know every oil change they are probably down to 1/3 oil or less...

Very confused, how did you know to take it to the dealer?

even though theres a TSB it's still hard to get some dealerships to resolve this issue. I kept bringing my vq35 in for oil consumption and the dealership kept saying its common and cannot be fixed. They also said that I'm lucky it's not the v8 5.6 because it consumes even more oil.

Aren't the vq engines made be renault?

No, the VQ engine (1994) pre-dates the Nissan-Renault alliance (1999).

Took my car in under this tsb. I checked my dipstick and it came up dry. Dealer captured only 2.5 quarts! Thank god I run full synthetic mobil 1. Just got the car back from dealer they are doing the "test" have to bring it to them in 2k miles- in the meantime I can not check my oil they zip tied the dip stick down, and chalked everything else.

Wow! What have your oil change intervals been? And driving style?
It's weird that this happens to some G37 engines and not others.

Wow this sucks. Just went through oil consumption with an 07 G35 rev up. But that thing really was consuming oil. My (late) 08 G37 uses very little oil. So far I've only noticed about half a qt every 3k miles which is well in the good zone!

just realized i never posted a followup....

got the replacement engine....managed to drive the required 2000km break in before putting the car away for the winter....and i have to say, maybe its just in my head, but the engine sounds and runs so much smoother. also that valve "tick" that i used to suffer with is all but gone now....and oil level (albeit only been 2000km) has not budged (it would have been down at least a quarter in old engine after same mileage).
so far so good....

2009, 7600k miles ,no issues to date other then windshield noise which I fixed myself. Switched to pennzoil ultra synthetic at 5k, It doesn't burn any oil and has never made a ticking sound, hope I continue to be lucky!

My oil level (based on dipstick) went from 3/4 to 7/16 after 1000 miles on Eneos 5w-30 semi synthetic. My car has <3000 miles total.

I will check it after 1000 miles to see where it is.

Does anybody know what the oil capacity is between HI and LOW marks on dipstick?

I have my 1000 mile check in a few days and my advisor also mentioned that according to TSB a new engine is probably the case

i wonder:

How clean of a job is this?
What parts of the engine are retained?
are cables spliced in the process?
are there gaskets that are manually cleaned and resealed by local techs?
missing clips, and cable/hose routings, bolts, torque, loctite etc etc?
