Oil Change at a regular shop

Hey guys,

I've got a friend (runs an auto service shop) whom I can trust and I'd like to get my oil/filter changed by him for my 2011 g37.

Looking for any recommendations about what should he use, I don't mind buying the oil separately. Is any any reason I should always get the oil change via infiniti dealer only?

thanks!

No reason that you have to use the dealership, there's absolutely nothing difficult or technical about changing oil. Use your friend. Most any oil will do fine. Opinions on what people prefer here: https://www.myg37.com/forums/general...il-thread.html

I highly recommend buying a Fumoto drain valve so that future oil changes are not as messy. And since we have a underbody shield, there's little chance that the valve will open from hitting something on the road.

I never really got the point of those. I guess I've never found the regular plug to be messy. Put your pan down. Position it. Loosen plug. Drain oil into pan. I've spilled oil on the driveway once or twice, but having a Fumoto valve wouldn't have helped with that.

The Z Speed undershield is a different story. The access panel with only 4 screws is great and you don't have to take out the 27,000 screws in the OEM plastic one or find something exactly the right height to block it in the down position if you just loosen just the back end and bend it down.

Except when you scrape that metal tray it would be really sad, and then seeing it later w/ all it's battle wounds, I think I'd rather just hear the "woosh" of my plastic tray when it's in distress, and I've come to ignore it's gouges and whatnot

People use the dealer for reciepts or tracking of maintenance, which can be done by keeping reciepts from your friends shop..

I buy synthetic from wally.. cheaper by a lot then what shops would charge

I'm just insanely lazy when it comes to repetitive processes. Surely we only change our oil every 3-5k miles, but it eliminates the chance of getting dirtier and having to tighten the plug again. That to me is worth $15

Pro tip: you can also attach a hose to the valve to redirect the oil straight into your old containers. This eliminates having to pour oil into a funnel and risking a spill (if you're clumsy like myself).
