Is automatic terrible?

So I just graduated from college and my Dad surprised me with a G for a present. However, its automatic. I feel kinda lame, but the car itself is pretty amazing. I'm justifying it so far by saying it has paddle shifters, but deep down I feel kind of like a girl. Is automatic just lame or is it just me? I'm also looking at adding an intake but don't know if its even worth it with the auto...thoughts/comments?

It all depends on the person... Personally i would never own the G in a auto but.. stick isnt for everyone.. and yes adding an intake is worth it on an auto just as much as 6MT

I will take Auto any day in bumper to bumper traffic, such as Los Angeles.

Question: what is your daily commute like? Bumper to bumper or are you cruising at a somewhat constant speed?

You'll thank your Dad, when you are sitting in creepin' a$$ traffic. I live in L.A., w/out traffic my job is about a half an hour away by freeway. But there has NEVER been a day without traffic and my commute turns into 1.5-2hrs one way. While I'm inching along, I'm so thankful I'm in my daily-driver automatic, while my G is sitting in the garage.

MAn there is no right answer to this question. Growing up I learned on and was only allowed to drive manual. I got the G in the AT because for once I wanted the lurury of not shifting all the time day in and day out. And with the paddle shifters this car is a blast and so far the AT has the fastest time in the 1/4 mile that I have seen posted on this board.
Some will say it is not a mans car if it is an auto. To that I say whatever. if your ^MT is all that definds you as a man you got a sad little life.
Both tranny's are fun and no matter what you have the car is fast and beautiful.
Have fun with the AT.

you cant feel lame at all. the car is a gift and you should appreciate it. I drove stick for my first car because i begged my parents and sold it and bought an auto g37. best decision ive made. I wont lie, the 6spd g37 is really niice, but ive had my fun and sick of driving stick in traffic.

Nothing to feel lame about. Not only is the auto G37 a great ride you'll appreciate it while driving in heavy traffic, trust me I have a 6 speed. Although I love the manual trans, I know that when it comes to reselling the car the auto will be alot more in demand. You must have one great Dad, that's one heck of a great present. Enjoy.

Well would you rather have - say a Toyota Tercel- in manual? Would that be a man's car?

You got a 40+ k CAR WITH 330 HP RWD w/ manual shift option. I wouldn't call that lame.
You have the best of both worlds in the auto.

When you want to rumble around, make noise and hit some twisties- you can do it in the auto. When you just want to chill and let the car do all the work, you can do that too.
The 6MT is a blast but much of the argument of whether or not it's "lame" (to have 5AT) is all based on one's individual perspective. That's why there is more than one option. To me this is a GT more-so than an all out sport so either is acceptable.

I got tired of MTs a long time ago and now that ATs are performing on par with manuals the difference between the two is much more simply a matter of preference. The G represents in both trannys.

+1 +1 +1..... Houston doesn't even compare to L.A. but there are days when I wish I had 5AT or maybe waited for the 2009 7AT.

Auto is NOT Lame....

+1 to all said. i've been an auto owner with the previous three cars i've owned, i got a mt for the g, cus it's a sports car and i wanted to always have full binding control between driver/car, but auto... in traffic... auto when there's 20 lights between you and ur destination, is something everyone wishes they had during that time. so it depends on ur daily routine. 6mt is for me! but to answer ur question. no it's not terrible

I have to disagree with that to a point... In my situation years down the road I am going to sell my G(maybe) and it will be modded. You will get just a bit more out of your mods if you have a 6spd to back it up with.
Hence when I sold my 02 maxima... I was covetted by alot of buyers because it was 6mt. Now... if your plan jane and dont mod your car... I can see that being the case. But id say 75% of people around here mod there G. (which brings up a Poll thread idea)

And to the OP: What do your parents say about the car? Did they pay it off up front? If it gives you such a complex... Go to the bank... get 5k out of it... then take your G and trade it with the 5k and you can get any G37 6MT you want...

Driving an AUTO is very LAME!... but The g37 makes it fun and ok because of the speed of the shifting and the paddles...So dont feel bad...

oh and I drvie a 6mt and would still drive a 6mt if I had to fight traffic everyday... thats just me...

Thanks for the replys, guys. I feel better. To those asking about my commute, I live in Wilmington, NC which is a small beach/college town. Hell the nearest Infiniti dealership is 2hrs away. Traffic here is next to nothing, especially after living in the DC/Metro area most my life. Good thing about being down here though is there is NO G's in this area, I feel so damn unique. But you guys made some good points, I think having MT back in the day was a lot more important than it is now, the technology these days is pretty amazing so I guess there is next to no difference in the two now.

+1 to this post.

OP: Call me lame, if you want.

Your dad gave you a car that would stretch most new grad's budgets. The car rocks. A lot of us here were using our own money when we purchased and decided upon the AT. Some people actually intend to buy automatic transmissions, as hard as that might be to believe.

I live near DC and am on the Capital Beltway all the time. It isn't LA, but it is pretty damn bad. I'm very glad I got AT.
