Is automatic terrible?
Congratulations on your new G - your Dad sure picked a great present.
I agree with all the other posts, if you drive in heavy traffic most of the time (like I do),
you'll be glad you have the automatic. Right now you're in an area that doesn't have much traffic, but you may move, the area may build up, etc. If you get bored, there's always the paddle shifters to have fun with. Next time you're in heavy bumper to bumper traffic, try just using the paddle shifters exclusively, bet it makes you appreciate the 5AT

I've never owned a Manual car but every car I've owned has had tiptronic and now paddle shifters in the G37, I think it's best you can shift when you want and throw it in D when you don't. Sounds like you at least got Premium and Sport, maybe Nav? Hell if my dad bought me this car it would be the cheapest version he could find, "it's just a car car, drive the damn thing, you dont need Nav etc.." just be lucky you got it, there's nothing girly about an AT.

Justifying it??? Why do you feel like you have to "justify" a G37S to yourself or to anyone else?
My dad was a taxi driver back in NYC; I got his 1985 cab yellow Ford Crown Victoria (minus the cab stickers and sign on the roof) to use when he wanted to run errands or pick up my mom from the subway. Try picking up honeys and hoes in that. Some of my buddies chuckled at me behind my back; but then I realized a crappy car is better than no car at all.
My apologies for the rant hazewow. Your dad is a wonderful dad to buy a brand new G37S and I misinterpreted your post thinking you were a little ungrateful just because it wasn't the 6MT.
Again; my apologies if I offended you in anyway. Enjoy your new G.

As an experienced manual tranny driver, I don't personally understand the implication that traffic necessitates an automatic transmission. If you like automatic, get automatic. If you like manual, get manual. They have decidedly different feels (paddles on a torque converter-based auto tranny do not resemble a manual in any way) so it's a choice to be made for sure. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.
In regards the traffic... when I get stuck in traffic I don't even notice that I'm working the clutch and the gears... I do it automatically just like breathing and beating my heart. It's certainly not an issue.

So I just graduated from college and my Dad surprised me with a G for a present. However, its automatic. I feel kinda lame, but the car itself is pretty amazing. I'm justifying it so far by saying it has paddle shifters, but deep down I feel kind of like a girl. Is automatic just lame or is it just me? I'm also looking at adding an intake but don't know if its even worth it with the auto...thoughts/comments?
This car kicks some serious *** in automatic.
You don't need the 6 speed.
Alot of guys with manual love it, but for .01 tenths of a second in quater mile (with perfect shifting)it's not worth the trouble.
I live in ny area & am in alot of traffic, so stick is out for me.
Just use in DS MODE & it's just like stick w/o clutch.
Next person who says you are a chick cause you have an automatic if you can show them your car & ask them what they drive lol.

Porshce, Ferrari and a lot of exotics come with some sort of manumatic clutch type of transmission. They may offer manuals, but they know that most potential buyers are gonna want the automobile to do the work for them.
Aston, Porsche, Ferrari, all of those cars have "triptonic" automatics that are actually just computer-controlled manuals. Just like an F1 car.
What is in the G is a typical automatic tranny just like a Honda Accord. It just has overrides to let you control when it shifts up or down.
There's a big difference between these two ideas. There's nothing wrong with an automatic G37 or any other car. But let's not be silly and claim that the G has anything like what those exotic cars have for transmissions or claim that there is no difference.
The car feels totally different.... some people hate the manual feel. They can be a little rougher when coasting because the engine is directly connected to the transmission, whereas the AT has a fluid connection that absorbs a lot of the roughness at low revs. That same roughness is what a lot of us MT loyalists love tho -- because when you press the go pedal, you get an immediate response in your seatback. With the AT there is some free-play in the drive train and the first response to the go pedal is a bit of free-spinning engine revving. What's in the exotics would feel a lot more like a 6MT to the driver than a 5AT.
I think in a few years dual-clutch automatics (aka DSG) will be the norm and at that point I'll give up my clutch pedal and starting texting while driving (j/k!)

The point I was trying to make is that a lot of those cars have an automatic option for the times when shifting is more of chore than a blessing....
Yeah well those cars do it without sacrificing anything. In our price point you are making a choice beyond what they make you choose.
I thought you intended to say that because the exotics had automatics trannies that have absolutely nothing in common with the G37's AT that made the AT in the G somehow better/cooler/comparable.
If you were indeed just letting us know about the much better technology that we'll someday have in our cars, then my bad.
Just in case you missed it and before you start calling me a 6MT snob -- as soon as there's a DSG available in my price range I'm jumping ship on manual trannies. I only prefer the manual tranny because I don't like the more boat-like characteristics of a torque-converter automatic -- it revs and THEN it goes. It has nearly nothing to do with the actual shifting.
I think now that the GTR is driving around with a Nissan DSG tranny, it is only a matter of time before that trickles down into Infinitis.

It would be interesting to see the ages of the drivers that say ^mt is the only way to go and 5AT is for girls. I bet you are mostly under the 26 mark.
This thread is getting off topic a little. I think we can all agree that the G in 6 mt or 5 at is a sweet ride.

. damn, you have to be lazy to say you do not want a stick in traffic....
