I think it has something to do with ds mode.
high rpm's when car dowshifts, alot of pressure on the exhaust.
Muffler can't handle all that backpresure, it's only a matter of time.
PS I drive in ds mode alot.
anyway, hopefully they fix without the b.s.

Interesting post. I noticed the "rattling tin can sound" on my passenger side -not both.
second, i ignored the problem thinking it was weather related. seeing how its gets below zero here often i figured that was the catalyst.
third i've spoken to three (randomly selected) dealers and two said they have dealt with this issue before.
The closest dealer to me is two hours away and i dont know what to do! anyone here have any advice on what they did to get the problem fixed and how longthey waited etc...?
One thing i must note: the sound doesnt happen all the time either. only after a while of not turning the car on have i noticed it... and some times when you leave a stop sign.. i dont know what to think..
I've only had this problem and the seatbelt that came apart... =(
one more problem and lemon? what happens to your car if its a lemon and you leased it?

They told me a new muffler was made as of 02/08.
I have an appointment at dealer hopefully this works.
Damnnn seems like we are in the same boat , while was reading i got a call from the Infiniti dealer here (FTL) about the same thing ......so i'm going to take it in to get it fitted for the third time again next week so i hope this is it.....
If it is an entirely new muffler, i wonder how the sound will be affected.
Keep us posted... i'm still waiting to hear ANYTHING from my dealer, its been almost two weeks since they said they wd call me. I reminded them last week... so lets see by this friday if i hear anything.
no engine light, rattle sound gets really loud at start up, (buzzing sound/like loud stereo rattling license plate)
really annoying, as I can't deal with this hassle.
Nice Loaner
yesterday I got off work early, backed the car up on ramps in the driveway and took off the license plate. I looked for heat shields contacting other metal. I looked for loose welds on hangers , etc. Finally I got a Rubber Mallet and hit the driver's side flange of the pipe to muffler joint. The muffler rattled.
Today, I just dropped it off at the dealership. They had not had the issue come up before but the shop foreman heard the noise and said, "OK I hear it, not normal".
It really does buzz as much as it does rattle. I was afraid I could not reproduce it but I left the engine off for 10 minutes, then revved in park with the doors open with him in the car and it was plenty loud. It's a bitter higher octave than the normal raspiness of the car. It's been getting progressively worse with 4000 miles on the car now.
They kept the car and gave me a loaner. I wonder how I can be sure I get the "new muffler". He did not say that he was going to replace the muffler but I did tell him about this thread and he said he would replace the muffler if he could verify that it was indeed the muffler.
If I could talk to that rep maybe I could get him to call my service adviser.
