Question Removing Oil filter problems

I have a 12 G37 AWD. All my filter wrenches are too big and I can not get the oil filter off by hand. It is too tight and was put on by the dealer.

Does anyone have a suggestion for an oil filter wrench that will work for this car?

Thanks.

If you remove the under tray completely you should be able to grip it pretty easily with both hands. Put a couple of wide rubber bands around it (like the ones you get off of fresh broccoli), grip tightly, and get it off. If you can't do that, you can stab through it crosswise with a long screwdriver and have handles to turn it off. Or you can go into any auto parts store and get a replacement filter to gauge the size and get the correct wrench based on that.

yeah i thought about stabbing it with a screwdriver. I will just go to the store and look for right size wrench. Not a huge deal that I didnt change it but I have always changed the filter when changing oil.

I did remove the undertray enough but could not get it off or get anything to grip it. I wish it was bigger so my old wrenches would work

If you go to any auto store you should be able to find an oil filter plier

It essentially crushes the filter but lets you get a good grip to unscrew it. Its one use if you intend on DIY oil changes.

The fact that you can not remove it with your hands is not an issue, it's actually good!
This is typical, even for a hand tightened filter, that has the gasket oiled before installing.

Stabbing the filter or using crush pliers should be a last resort.

Get a band style filter wrench that is properly sized, it will come off fairly easily.

Don't forget to rub some clean oil on the new filters gasket before installing.

You need one of these

You need to remove the fiberboard shroud underneath the car

You can also use a end cap wrench. I only use it to tighten the filter 1/8 turn after it is hand tight but you can also use it to remove the oil filter.

Use a 3/8 inch drive socket wrench

I have an older filter wrench that fits the small diameter GM filters. These filters are slightly larger diameter than the g37 filter. A small length of heater hose cut long ways to fit in between the wrench and the filter does the job.

I've had this happen to me on older cars. It'll come off. Just breathe, curse, squeeze and turn and it'll give. the broccoli-band is a great idea. Good times

This is what happened when I tried to put a hole into a cheap china filter in my brothers van. I literally had to take needle nose pliers and stick them into those tiny drain back holes and use a pry bar to get this damn thing off. Use a filter wrench or socket, use the screw driver hole method till the end.

The real root of the problem - stop putting oil filters on that tight. Lubricate the rubber seal on the new filter with some oil. Screw it on until the seal touches the seating surface. Only tighten another 2/3 to 1 full turn. That's all you need. It won't leak. Putting it tighter won't accomplish anything but making it very difficult to remove.
