Checking oil level

How long do you have to let the car sit for the oil to drain down into the pan. I checked the oil level in the morning, the dip stick had oil all over it. Wiped it clean inserted it back in and took it out with the same result, did it a few times and couldn't figure out.

Thanks

I'd say 10 to 15 minutes.

Make sure you're not scraping against the metal when you pull up the dip stick because that can smear oil all over the place. I think that's what you're talking about right?

Better take it to the dealer, sounds like you might have an oil problem since it's not draining properly

Just open the oil cap when the car is running and see if you see oil running through the engine. If you do, then you have oil.

I put in slight over 5qt oil after letting it drain when the car was on ramps. It looks like its overfilled, and I was checking the oil level on slight decline. I'm gonna drain the extra oil.

Thanks

I'm sure you are fine.

After I change my oil, I start my engine for about 1 minute.

Kill it, and immediately check the oil level. I want my level to be reading full when the engine is in operation.

when the engine is cold my oil level reads above the top mark.

I have done this for my past 4 cars and have had no issues.
