check this out. "esters are one of the classes of synthetics that have been used in Mobil 1 products as well."

so mobil 1 oil uses ester based chemicals?

https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English...Ester_Oil.aspx

PS:
walmart is the best place for the mobil1 (5 quarts) in a single container around 24 bucks..cheaper than buying single quarts..

i just switched to mobil 1 at 20k

Maybe this link to sister site my350z.com should be stickied here as well:

It's long, but well worth the read IMO.

I think the thing that was supposedly special about the Nissan Ester is that it had "nanoparticles" not just ester....

Not exactly. Yes, it is a conventional motor oil. And, most (maybe all, I haven't checked the no-name brands) motor oils contain ester additives.

Neither the Nissan European patent application nor "white paper" mention any additional, different or special ester additives.

One of the great mysteries is why Nissan named this oil "Ester".

That test report has been around a long time. Oil cannot be evaluated on the basis of just one test and that test is a rather crude and very old method of comparing oils. There are many more criteria to be considered. There aren't any surfaces in a modern auto engine that are subject to the type of loads produced by that machine.

I'll repeat, oil choice just isn't a big deal. Yet people discuss various oils like it is such an important decision to make for your engine. It just isn't.

Totally agree, you could use the cheapest oil out there and be fine with 3750 mile changes, now long intervals may make a difference, but under normal circumstances not a big deal. Of course I use Penzoil Platinum so I don't practice what I preach . It's still pretty cheap though and Im using 7500 intervals as well.

I am using Mobil 1 now. I was planning on changing every 7500 miles. Its that too long, or is 5000 mi better.

The manual outlines eitehr 3000, 3750 or 7500. Obvioulsy it's more profitable for dealerships and oil companys to recommend 3k intervals, but it's a waste of money according to most experts. Especially if you are using a synthetic, 7500 should be fine.

Manual says nothing about 3000 miles. It says 7500 miles or 3750 miles for severe service...assuming conventional oil. 7500 miles is fine with synthetic.

Going to be using Amsoil and a Fumuto valve on my sedan when the first oil change is do. I've been using both on my Ford Powerstroke for 11 years(127,000 miles and counting) and it makes changing the oil a breeze.

This debate will go on forever because every oil company thinks their oil is better than all the others. Marketing, it's an amazing thing. It all comes down to personal preference on which brand of oil each person uses. Synthetic is always going to be better than Mineral "dino" oil. My Dad always used dino Castrol, before all the synthetics came out, so that's what I used when I started driving and changing my oil. He and I never had any problems with it and now I've been using Castrol Syntec in every car I've owned with no problems at all, and will continue to do so. I'm sure there will be a couple on here that will disagree and flame spray with something similar to "What?! Are you retarded or something? Using Castrol instead of one with Ester additive!!!!", but you can't beat first hand experience with things you've used before. I trust Castrol, so that's what I use. 315,000 miles on a '86 S10 4X4 w/ 2.8L V6 using dino Castrol is proof enough for me.

This is a very good read for people that want to understand how oil works.

Oil 101 - 107
