So it's time for my 1st oil change. I called the dealer and they recommended synthetic blend @ 4500 mile intervals. I'm coming from the Euro community where we ONLY used synthetic. It would be nice for the oil changes to be less than half the cost of my Euros, but I want to make sure I use the right thing.

Is everyone here using/recommending Synthetic and if so, what weight? I have about 88k on my G

Same weight as in the owner's manual... 5W-30.

I tried reading through it, I really did. But the blogger is also a serious self-important douchbag, and I couldn't stomach his writing.

Yeah, but I took that aspect to be a measure against the armchair experts rather than fully representational of the individual IRL. For a noob like me, I found it both interesting and informative.

What are your thoughts on the time interval aspect of the oil change? I don't tend to drive many miles per month/year so do I still need to change the oil at least every 6 months like the maintenance guide suggests or is that just for conventional oil?

I'm on my 6th VQ - 3.0,3.5,3.7 - run without an engine cover and spend an inordinate amount of time listening to the valvetrain

I can ALWAYS hear a difference, improvement after oil change, even if it's short

If you do your own, you can easily submit a sample to Blackstone. (I think the detail you get back is pretty cool)

then you can start extending to 3/4 year or annually with a wear report. you have to keep submitting though...;-)

I found the parts where he cooked the oil and then measured again really interesting. I switched to QS Ultimate Durability based on his data and regularly finding it at Walmart for <$20

Of course the only TRUE test is to try different oils after the EXACT same interval and driving conditions and then submitting to Blackstone and comparing results

Ain't nobody got time for that...
