navi map while driving

I find it kinda frustrating when I'm driving and I see a gas station or resturant and want to press it but can't. Everytime I press the screen while driving it moves the current location as opposed to getting the info on the specific spot. For example I would see an incident/accident on the freeway but when I press the icon, it just moves the map around. Is this just how its designed? I know when I was test driving a Lexus LS I can press the incident button on the navi screen and it'll show the info.

The navigation can be used while driving but only in voice mode.

As frustrating as it may be, you have to consider the one moron who would try to use the touch screen while driving, lose concentration on the road, cause a 6 car pile up, and sue Infiniti because it's their fault for letting him do it.

Actually, once one idiot did it and won or got a settlement, everyone who had an accident in a G37 would say that it's Infiniti's fault for the nav allowing them to be distracted. Can you say 100 million dollar calss action law suit?

Good points Bud, My advice - use voice while you are driving - I like how it picks the 5 things it thinks you said and usually one of them is what you said and you can just say the number denoting it. And on top of that I would do that lil feature that teaches it your voice and speaking style. BTW how does one get into that mode???

This is really the only complaint I have about the NAV system in my G37. You should be able to press an on screen icon to get information about that particular POI. My Lexus lets you do it, but for some reason Infiniti has that feature locked out and it's very frustrating. Aside from that, however, I think the whole Nav/phone/audio system in the G37 is very well done.

Beleive it or not a decade ago or so a lady purchased a Wini and the cruise control "0says set it and go," well she set it, and she got up while doing 65 and you can all guess what happend next! Oh and she won over a million from Wini and a new one!

Even when you are not moving, you can't press a POI and get info on it. Heck my Pioneer AVIC will let you do that and it will center the map on your selection. With the Infiniti NAV you have to use the controls to fly location icon to the POI. You can never get the icon directly over the POI or to the precise locaiton tha tyou intend. It kinda defeats the purpose of having the touchscreen.

This does seem painfully foolish. Manually scrolling the map to hover over a POI or accident indicator takes your eyes off the road WAY longer than necessary. I think it's far more dangerous than simply pressing the icon and seeing the info.

I may be wrong, but I was driving my dad and sister back from dinner last night, and we were looking at the navigation... I guess it makes sense you can't make a new destination while driving... but I think it's a little over the top that you can choose an existing destination while moving.

I may be wrong about that, because I just said that to move the attention off of that as I haven't messed with the navigation much since I've gotten my G37.

The thing is with saved destinations you just need to select a number or do the voice-command where as if you need to input a new destination you need to type it in. And typing in the destination takes a little time and concentration which makes it unsafe. I believe you can do this through voice-commands though but I don't remember if this was one of the things taken out because "it was to complicated."

That makes sense, I haven't taken time to peruse the voice command list yet...
