13' G37 - VVT Sprocket Adjustment / Encoder Ring Adjustment

I've been attempting to help my Nephew with his hand-me-down 13' G37x his father bestowed upon him. It's at 166K and has had a few issues since passing the torch that I have fixed. Last month it just randomly died at a stop sign and wouldn't restart. He had it towed to a local mom and pop and P0340 was the code. They replaced the CPS (Camshaft Position Sensor) on Bank 2, even through P0340 is Bank 1. Anyway...it still wouldn't start. I left the new CPS in Bank 2 and bought another new one for Bank 1. I popped it in last night and symptoms did not resolve. I unplugged Bank 1 (pass side) and the car started right up, but was in limp mode. Further investigations point to the Encoder Ring on the VVT Sprocket having slipped perhaps. I can find a lot of documentation on the problem, but absolutely no write up really on how to actually do the job. I've read http://www.jimwolftechnology.com/wol...derslipped.pdf 100 times and there really isn't a path to fix

So my question is - Does anyone have a write-up, video, anything on the actual procedure of adjusting the Encoder Ring, where exactly it should be, ETC? A new one is $170, so that is an option as well, but I DO NOT want to remove the whole timing chain ETC, I just want to get him back on the road and this car out of my driveway before snow.

Thanks!

Have you read through this thread that forum moderator @BULL put together. Once you verify the encoder ring has "slipped" you can take a small brass punch (or equiv.) and lightly tap it back into its proper alignment. Many have had great success realigning the ring.

This thread is gold. Very much appreciated. Reading through that it seems like I can just pop off the cam covers, see what tooth I'm at, and if off, pound the encoder with a brass drift to the correct too. Optionally - weld the ring the the front plate of the Phaser, or tell me Nephew to drive like a semi-normal human. Honestly seems pretty straightforward. Thank you!!!

I have heard a bunch of ideas to permanently "lock" the encoder ring to the cam sprocket with a small tack weld being the most popular. I am not familiar with anyone doing same.

Either way, good luck and plz let us know how you make out.
