Engine Swap

Hey guys, I’m currently doing an engine swap on my 2009 g37x, I bought an engine out of a 2012 M37x, I was wondering if the wiring harness and stuff is all plug and play? Is there anything I need to look out for that may be different between the two engines? Thanks in advance

The engine itself is the same. you can reuse your original wiring harness. The only sensor that might be different that you need to confirm the is upstream o2 sensor, but you can reuse the one off your g37 engine.

There are so many production changes from year-to-year that it's unlikely to be a plug-and-play without some issues. Compound that with a model change and I suspect you may have CELs popping up here and there.

the main engine itself is the same and most of the sensors use the plugs.

I put a 2015 q50 engine in my 2010 g37. Reused original wiring harness from my g37. I did reused some sensors like the upstream o2 and oil pressure sensor since my replacement was missing some.

So the wiring harness isn’t the same? I’d have to reuse my old one? Also I bought the kit to do the gallery gaskets but since the new engine is a 2012 do you guys think it’s necessary to swap them out? Thanks

I am not sure if the harness connector to the ecu is the same for the m37 vs g37. If it is, then I don’t see why you can’t use the m37 harness.

On the engine side, pretty much all the sensors are the same across all VHR. Some years did have different plugs but you can just swap out the sensor for the correct plug to match the harness.

heard somewhere that the intake plenum also has to be swapped, is this true?

it doesn't. the upper manifold does have a slight differences depending on year in that bolt lengths are different due to a spacer but that's it. its interchangeable.

2009 and 2012 VHR should be using the style manifold. I think its 2014+ years that has different bolt spacing.

Your old wiring harness as well as the A/F sensors (upstream O2) need to be changed.
Though the harness in the ecm side will look the same, the M uses different pin locations for the transmission side of the M116 connector (white rectangle)
The A/F sensors in the 09 will be black square connectors vs the 2012 ones will be gray square connectors.

In the situation where you damage a sensor you can shave some of the tabs of the gray connectors and it will fit onto the black connector.
This or you could de-pin the 12 sensors and transplant the black connector to them.
