so what do you suggest in the winters? (not designed to sound angry so apologizes if it comes off that way)
For the NE, like you and me? Snow tires. For the South, like Future... I'd suggest normal (not UHP) A/S tires in the winter, and proper summer-only tires the other 9 months.
You know, not everyone has storage space for two sets of tires/wheels. Or the time to swap them, or the money to spend on the setup. You make due with what you have, make the compromises you have to make, and try not to choke on the Kool-aid while making those decisions.
Summer tires aren't the only performance tires.... my UHP A/S handle all that stuff fine, year round.
From a performance perspective, summer tires are the best though, and they are fantastic in wet weather.

Agreed. I've never turned my TC/Stability control off, and I've never pushed my car to the ragged edge of traction. Probably because that ragged edge is so high as to not be exceeded on the street.

I think us southern folks, that don't regularly see snow, would be better served switching between summer and all seasons. Much like summers don't do well in cold weather, I'd suspect snow tires would suck when the temperatures occasionally spike into the 60s and 70s during what is still "winter".
The other consideration is how much one drives. I think Future has said he drives ~20K a year. I drive closer to 12K, which means I'm replacing tires every 15 months or so. No way could I justify PSS every 8-9 months.

glad to know i was on the right track then. Car came with new A/S tires so wouldn't have been cost efficient to go out and buy new snow tires. Gonna wait for these A/S to go then purchase snows. Thanks for the help

Think your xS is good in the snow & ice with new A/S tires? Just wait until you put snows on that AWD car. Nothing will stop you. Not even this weekend's blizzard.
Good luck with that, BTW. For whatever reason, we're not getting it in Western NY. Just bitter cold and sunshine.

That was actually an autocorrect haha. Whether...
And John, I'm getting rid of my 20"s. Already sold the Yokohama tires. Need to weld up a crack courtesy of Toronto potholes and have the wheels refinished, but then they're gone. Im going to be that guy and run these winter reps this summer while I save up a bit and decide what I want for my next set.

I haven't either, and I've actually spun my car on the street with it on Only in the wet though. But yea I don't play those games

Yep, I got the car last April with 42K miles and I just turned over 60K miles. I was out of the country for 3 weeks after getting the car, and my wife drove it for a month or so after her car got totalled. So with my lower motorcycle riding I'm probably gonna do like 25K.
I do have room for additional tires; I actually forgot I still have my duckfeet under my house, but I just don't have the time to swap tires out 2x/year. Too much going on.
Probably not. For Boston, my guess is mid-April, which is just 3-4 weeks away.
Might seem like a lifetime, considering the 1-2-3 punch in the gut you got in snowstorms over the last couple weeks. That must have really sucked.
I've been on mine for a few weeks :/. I usually do them the fist week of April, but this year with our store opening the end of this month I'll have not time. Did it early and have to take the NX F-Sport when it snows
Lucky for me I live on the Gulf Coast. Summer tires year-round. Better in the wet than all-season tire, too. The few times a year when temps drop below forty-five, I drive slowly or not at all. Being retired, I have that option.
I leave T/C on, too, because a mistake around other cars would be expensive. I also leave it on at the track because it's my ride home. Broke a wheel in my Miata at the track and it wasn't fun.
I see no reason to buy A/S except for cold weather use or because you're cheap or can't afford the best tires.
A/S tires are only good till 7°C anyways, anything below, they start to lose traction, so you need winters regardless. Summer tires are good till around 15°C before you start to feel diminished traction. Half the year here is around that 15° mark, so I don't know if going for pure summers would be worth it. Either way I'll be spending around 1k (CAD) on tires, so its not a matter of finances.
I definitely drive a helluva lot more in the summer, so that may be my answer. WHY IS THIS SO HARD?!
EDIT: Screw it... just ordered Pilot Sport 4s, somehow this is Rochester's fault.
