Steering to easy at low speeds?

My previous car was a 2001 BMW 530, which had fantastic steering feel and gave lots of feedback. You always knew what the front was doing.

In comparison to my G37 Sport the steering is too over boosted at speeds below 60 MPH. In looking at how the variable assist works, it would be very easy to reduce the boost and get more feel.

Am I alone in feeling it is over boosted and has anyone modified the system to reduce power steering boost at all speeds?

Personally I haven't felt like my steering has felt over boosted. However, my past three cars have been Infiniti's ('07 G35S, '11 FX35, '11 G37S LE - current) so it may be something I'm just used to. I realize that's not very helpful though.

If you figure out a simple way of dialing it back, I think it'd be interesting to try it!

Take into consideration that what you're feeling may be oversteer, and not overpowered steering. In fact, from what I've read the steering of these cars is one of it's most applauded features.

Have you installed new swaybars yet? If not, you should. It changes the handling of the car entirely. You will find many many users on here who stand by that.

You'll need to be running summer tires to get the heavy feel to the steering that you want. If you run all season tires on the S model, you'll get a much lighter feel than the OEM summer tires that came with the car. I would assume that heavier sway bars would make steering heavier regardless of which type you use.

Over steer? The hell are you talking about. OP is talking about power steering assist and you come in here talking about oversteer and sway bars?

Two very different things that has nothing to do with one another.

Back on topic.

My last car was a 08 TL and the steering in that thing at low speeds was very heavy at low speeds. When I let other people drive it they would all usually point out how heavy the steering feels at low speeds. I was used to it and never thought nothing of it.

Than when I got my G37S RWD sedan the first thing I noticed was how light the steering felt at low speeds. It was a huge difference compared to my TL. I actually like it this way.

Thanks for your input, but it is not oversteer. The steering wheel is too easy to turn at low speeds, at least for me. We all have different preferences.

Sway bars help to increase roll stiffness which is not related to the steering effort.

After reading the STC section of the FSM, I will scope the power steering solenoid valve and document the duty cycle at different vehicle speeds and engine RPM. Ideally I would like the power steering assist to be much less and CONSTANT.

A lower average voltage at the PSSV (~2 volts) = the reduced assist we experience at 60 mph.

Something like this may be the solution:
AutoSpeed - Modifying Speed-Sensitive Power Steering

I was driving a Honda Accord and sometimes my mom's MDX before the G. By comparison the G has so much better steering feedback, sometimes when I go to the gym and go hard on arms its a chore hahaha.

The strange thing with my car is when it was stock the steering was REALLY heavy. At low speeds it was almost too heavy.

But after I put in the lowering springs the steering is really light and easy to turn.... I don't get it. I prefer it now though.

You may have altered your caster when lowering, especially if you added aftermarket camber arms. Less caster will make it easier to turn off center.
