G37 Questions:

Hello all,

My current car is on it's way out and I've been looking around for a replacement. Truthfully, I wasn't looking at a G37 but the prices are so discounted I can't look past it.

First question, is dependability:

I need the car to last a while, is there any issues I should be aware of?
I'm looking at anything from a 2011-2014 G37x

Are there any significant changes with the years I should take note of? It seems like it's only been little changes here and there from my research but I just wanted to be sure.

For those years there's not much change going on, but the 2011s will be short on warranty so yu might want to go w/ a 2012 +. Also if you don't absolutely need a AWD I'd look into a RWD and use snow tires in winter if you can get by.

Welcome to the site BTW!

There's a 2011 near me with 12k original miles. If they drop the price to where I would want I wouldn't mind the shortened warranty, price just has to be where I want it.

This being said it's been easier to find what I would really want, a G37X with the sport package if I went with a newer model.

Any widespread issues? My TL has close to 200k miles right now so I tend to drive my cars into the dirt.

Unfortunately AWD is a must based on where I live(Northeast).

I drive a 6mt rwd and I am in Ontario, Canada, with good winter tires have had no issues with winter driving. Have driven in a couple of snowstorms with it and had no issues with slipping etc but again winter tires are a must.

Trust me, AWD is a must where I live. All hills are at about a 20% grade, they barely plow to keep costs down and will let it sit overnight turning into ice. I have a Charger R/T in the garage and I threw some snow tires on it one winter just to see if I could make it happen and it was all over the place.

What year is your TL? I just came from a 2008 TL. In the process of selling it atm. Bought a 2011 G37S Sedan automatic

2010. I used to have a REALLY long commute(166 miles each way) hence the absurd miles.

I'm predisposed to dismiss people who think they *need* AWD because of winter, when what most people really need first are snow tires and common sense. However, you nailed the actual need... hills & snow. It helps immensely to have snow tires and ABS to go down that hill, but if all you have is snows on a RWD passenger car, good luck driving up the hill.

Here's info on your search: be aware that on the AWD Sedan, the Sport Package is appearance-only. The steering, brakes and suspension are not upgraded on the AWD Sport Package.

2011 through 2014, the Sedan is unchanged. Although 2013 was the last year for the Sport Package, both real (RWD) and appearance-only (AWD).

As for reliability... it's a widely mass-produced drive-train that's been proven over many, many years. Basic Nissan technology, both reliable and relatively inexpensive to repair.

Yeah I'm at the bottom of one of those hills and I need to go up to get anywhere unfortunately.

Ahhh... Dang, that's good information. The dealership had a few on the lot and I was looking at the rotors while the salesman was swearing up and down they were bigger brakes.

Well , it's still one of the best sounding cars I've ever heard so I can't have it all lol.

It's been my experience that dealerships (certainly sales staff, but service management, too) are not familiar with the RWD Sport Package on the G37S Sedan, and will enthusiastically refer to all G's as a Sport Sedan... when that's simply not the case. I once had a Service Manager actually argue with me that the OEM wheels on my car was a square setup, because it was a sedan. I had to force him to look at the tires, and even then he had to ask a Senior Tech for a second opinion. It was crazy. Not sure what dog he had in that fight, but some people don't like to be told they're wrong.

If there's a BBK on a G37x Sedan, it was installed by a previous owner. And if there are sport-tuned shocks and thicker sway bars, they were also installed by a previous owner. Not much you can do about the steering rack, however. I've never read anything on this forum about someone changing that over, but honestly, it's one of the best aspects of the RWD-Sport... close ratio steering.

Don't get me wrong, you're on the right track looking for an AWD G. Have two sets of tires (summers and snows), get some aftermarket swaybars, and it will be a blast to drive. I wouldn't bother with flappy paddles, however. You do get them with the AWD Sport Package, but they're not very satisfying (IMO) with that 7AT.
