Clunking in cold weather!

Alright folks, here's my problem. When the weather began to turn cold a few weeks ago, I started to hear a clunking noise coming from my front suspension. I assumed that because the temp increased over the next couple of weeks, and the bolts securing my strut brace had backed off proper torque, that was the cause of the clunking since the noise was reduced. I checked the torque of my sways also, but they were just fine. Now it's cold again and the clunking has returned. Any suggestions before I would have to take the car back to stock and roll it to the dealer?

Maybe there's no grease in the front swaybar bushings.

I picked up a grease gun a few weeks back and juiced them until grease was coming out of the sides of the bushings.

When do you hear the noise? Can you replicate it easily? Is it constant? Or just something you hear when making turns for example? Are you certain it's coming from your suspension?

I've had similar problems as you described in previous cars I owned with aftermarket sway bars. The problem may be the grease you're using. If the grease hardens significantly in cold weather you can get the clunking noise you described. I only use Prothane grease now on my sway bar bushings and have had no problems since then.

I'll look into the prothane grease. I was wondering if there were different types of silicone grease.

I have the same problem. It is coming from both front wheels. Happens in the morning on the way into work (very cold out) and when the wheel goes into a dip. Once the wheel hits the bottom of the dip and the car drops as the wheel starts to climb back up, that is when the clunk sound happens. Almost like the shocks are bottoming out. I took it into the local Infiniti dealer and they checked it out and couldn't find anything wrong. We even went on a test drive and of course, I couldn't get the car to reproduce the issue. So, will have to keep an eye on it. Let me know if you find a source of the issue.

I'm sure there are different grades of silicone grease. Prothane "Super Grease" is a water-proof, urethane compatible, silicone-based grease with added Teflon. It doesn't significantly harden in cold weather.

A simple test is to put a sample of grease in your freezer overnight and see how much the cold affects is viscosity. If it get significantly harder, its probably not something you want to use on sway bar bushings.
