Extended Protection Plan

I bought a new 2010 G37 back in March. I already have 19,000 miles and I am starting to look at the extended warranties from Infiniti. My dealer quoted me $2,760 for 7/100,000 warranty.
1. Is this too much? If so, what is a responsible price for the 7/100,000 coverage?

2. Also, is the 100,000 mile warranty in addition to the miles I already have thus making it 119,000 mile warranty or is it 100,000 miles total?

This is the same warranty that we offer on our Certified Pre-Owned cars. Is it worth the cost for the peace of mind, that is your call. The warranty is up to 100,000 miles total.

Not that I can answer either of your two questions, but I've always been fundamentally against one of these extended warranty coverages. I'd ask myself why I bought this car if I felt that it would necessitate the additional warranty. Consumer reports and a variety of other sources all recommend against them. Rather than paying the $2760 for the extended warranty, put it in the bank. If you use it for repairs, fantastic - if not, you just saved yourself quite a bit of money. The reality is, if you keep buying all of these extended warranties on all of your products, you are paying way more than you probably would otherwise. I can guarantee you that Infiniti isn't taking a loss on those things, put it that way.

Just my two cents - not that you asked for it! :-)

Based on the rate you are putting miles on your G it seems like you might be doing a lot of highway driving...which is not particularly hard on vehicles. With the amount of miles you're accumulating, your extended warranty will expire in less than three years. IMO your risk factors for major expenses are fairly minimal given your usage of the car. That said, I don't like expensive extended warranties.

I wouldn't get the extended warranty.
You do realize that the 7 year is really only 3 years, since they start the 7 year and 100,000 miles the day the car is bought.
At the rate you are putting miles on your car, you could have 100,000 miles on in less then 4 years.
If your car is trouble free for the first 60,000 miles, which is covered on the original warranty, you shouldn't have too many concerns on putting another 40,000 on it.

its a racket...don't do it. if your car gets to a point where repairs are going to cost over 2700, then you might as well put that 2700 down on a new whip

Paid $1,510 for an 8 year Infiniti factory extended warranty ($100 deductible) for my 2010 G37S MT6 Sedan with Navi that I purchased this last April.

I generally don't favor extended warranties, but I decided that the price was so low that I couldn't refuse it, especially given the high complexity of this car and that it is a factory warranty. I think it is very likely that the warranty will be used, e.g. doubt the hard drive will last 8 years. We'll see.

See previous thread on this issue.

I look at it this way if the dealer is pushing a high extended warrenty then I really should be looking for another make. Dealer telling me my car is going to fail before 100,000 miles im going to Toyota lol

The Infiniti G37 is overall a very reliable car (see Consumer Reports), and so it is unlikely to "fail." That is, the mechanicals will likely go over 100 k miles without problems.

However, the car is electronically very complex, and repairs of these items will probably be expensive. I think it is likely that these items will require work during 8 years of ownership. For example, according to CR, after more than 4 years, the audio system reliability fell from better than average to average, and then to worse than average during the 8th year.

$1,510 is a very good price to double the length of the factory warranty for such items. However, I think that the $2,400 price that dealers generally quote is too high.

I agree with this statement....age plays an important part in the failure of electronics parts. OP will be out of extended warranty before the end of four years.

I would go for the peace of mind, my G has had its transmission replaced at 21K miles I couldn't imagine out of warranty and having a repair such as that...

We just bought an 2010 and I tack on the miles pretty consistantly at around 60 k or so a year. We bought the extended 200,000km no time constraint warranty for peace of mind for $2700.

If a computer problem happens as I've had happen with previous vehicles the repair will pay for warranty. I'd rather pay up front now and have that peace of mind so that if something unexpected happens while I'm on the road or if another major expense comes in I'm not worried about how to pay for it.

If I never have to use it (make a claim) then at 200,000 k they give back the the money. So minor issues I'll cover them myself if a major issue hits I have the insurance/warranty coverage.

I don't see a down side .....

I don't understand how a warranty could be offered in which you get your money back if you don't use the warranty. This violates the principle of shared risk when buying insurance. Isn't the price of extended warranties based on a large pool of purchasers of whom only a fraction make claims? If the money is refundable, then the only source of money in selling warranties is from those who make claims. It would seem to me that the price would have to be much higher than the usual. I wonder if the money is truly refundable, or if, rather, various technicalities are used to prevent a refund.

I think you need to read the fine print.
