2013 G37 IPL - whine issue

Hey G fam,

I have been the proud owner of a 2013 Malbec Black G37 IPL for a little over a year now. I previously had a '13 G37xs for a little over a year before moving to the IPL.

Since purchasing the IPL, there has been a constant whine when accelerating at low speeds, turning, etc. I am assuming this is due to the power steering pump. It has had no effect on actual steering and no actual issues other then the annoyance. I heard it could be from the poorly designed power steering reservoir that is pulling in air.

I am planning on replacing the whole pump and maybe the reservoir too just to be safe. Does this sound like the best place to start?

The IPL only has 25,000 miles on it. I am the second owner. No other issues.

I want to get this base issue fixed before I start doing anything else, possible intake and motordyne? exhaust in the future. Maybe some airbags. I could use recommendations for what to do next as well.

2013 G37 IPL - whine issue

Hey G fam,

I am the proud owner of a '13 Malbec Black G37 IPL with 25,000miles. I have it for a little over a year now, since purchase I have had a whine that occurs when steering and accelerating at slow speeds. Only really noticeable when you are in parking lots and at low speeds. There are no issues aside from the annoyance of the whine itself. Steering seems to be fine. I am assuming this is due to a bad power steering pump, or I have heard it could be the reservoir ( read it is a bad design that pulls in air)

Thinking about replacing the power steering pump myself, any other ideas what this could be? Considering replacing the reservoir too.

Thanks for reading and any advise

I’ve recently experienced the same issue (but on a 2013 6MT sedan, about 39,000 miles).

But the issue doesn’t always occur, and of course it was acting up when I brought it to the shop to get checked out. Surprisingly, the shop couldn’t find anything wrong (and even declined swapping the steering fluid, as it looked normal to them).

Will sit tight to see if others reply or you happen to find a solution

If your G37 has a manual transmission, it is normal for them to have a slight whine at lower speeds.
If possible, post a video.

Here is a video of the noise. Not my video but exactly the same issue/noise. https://www.dropbox.com/s/s7urszqpa8...90042.mp4?dl=0

My G37 IPL coupe is automatic, pretty sure it is the power steering pump or reservoir. Now just trying to decide which one to replace first, or both...

Thanks

I was thinking what the previous guy side - it was a 6MT and you were hearing drive train noise. But after watching your video - that doesnt sound right to me.

Sounds like the pump to me.
There is no need to replace the reservoir, just give it a good cleaning with brake cleaner on the inside.

My 13 IPL had the whine and the steering pump replaced at around 20k. Just glad I had the Elite warranty.

Sonic,

I am still not sure if it would be the pump or the reservoir. check out this thread below where people are advising it is the reservoir due to a faulty design that let air into the system.

I am thinking maybe start with the lower cost solution? My only concern is that I hear the whine with a slight acceleration, so that could mean just the pump and not reservoir.

Glife,

Do you know if they replaced the reservoir too or just the pump? just the reservoir?

Did yours whine with acceleration at low speeds? Thanks
