Your second option is a heat gun. One of my customers noticed it on his GT-R and said that Infiniti mentioned it was somewhat common. Infiniti has actually issued a letter regarding it on the paint on new cars in 2011 or so. Basically it was taped during shipping, whatever was stained was pushed down into the pores of the paint. Use a heat gun, heat up the paint, then give it a light wipe once it cools down a bit. I'm giving you this advice as a professional detailer.

This method was issued initially by Toyota for discoloration that occurred from water getting trapped under the tape. My concern with the heat gun approach is that I would overheat it. Then I would be really f*cked!

Absolutely. I mean, I'm not shy about trying things on my car, but that would scare me.

Maybe a hair dryer? Would that get hot enough to make a DIY difference without running a risk of damaging the paint?

First, I personally would let it bake in the direct sun for a few days. I had orange/yellow spots on my G, about the size of a grain of rice, that would not go away by ANY method. A couple weeks later I looked to find them and they were gone, just from being outside. It may be worth a try if you are worried about what the dealer might do (which I totally understand!).
