Victor, if you're going to quote me, quote the entire comment so it can be taken in context.

In the context of this thread, the outside door locks can't be used to start the car. From further reading, it appears all current G models come standard with the intelligent key system/push button ignition. So the transponder embedded blade maybe something that was used on older models (g35?)?

According to the owner's manual of my 2012 sedan, page 3-3,

Use the mechanical key to lock or unlock the doors, glove box and trunk passthrough lid, if they are equipped with a key cylinder.
On page 3-7, it says if/when the smart key is weak/dead, to insert it into the Intelligent key port to start the car with. Says nothing about the blade.

When the Intelligent Key battery is almost
discharged, insert the Intelligent Key into
the Intelligent Key port to start the engine.
Replace the discharged battery with a new
one as soon as possible. For more details,
see“Push-button ignition switch”(P.5-9)
Instructions on 5-9..

In this case, inserting the Intelligent Key
into the port *1 allows you to start the
engine. Make sure that the key ring side
faces backward as illustrated. Insert the
Intelligent Key in the port until it is latched
and secured.
Im pretty sure the rfid chip is built into the smart key itself, not the key blade. You mate up the smart key to the car, not the blade.

Sorry for the out of context quote. I thought maybe your 2012 had no key cylinders in the doors if push-start and you were saying it was the same for 2008.

Jsolo, what I've found confirms your comments. I had my key from Amazon ($60) programmed at a locksmith this morning and he said that older model Nissan/Infiniti's used a chip in the key, but that was sometime before 2008. Took about 15 minutes to program and you need to bring all keys you want to be valid because they basically tell the car to forget all keys and then tell it which keys to recognize.

My locksmith charged $45 to program the new fob and cut the key blade that came with it. So all said and done, I got my new key ready to go for about $105 plus taxes.

Good to know. Thanks for the update.

This chip in the key thing reminds me of my old camaro. Only back then, although it was called a chip, it was really nothing more than a resistor of a certain value, embedded in the key. There were 15 or 20 different variations of this back then. With today's tech, encoding an actual key hash (256bit or larger) into the key is an easy possibility.

This is interesting news. I always thought that only dealers can pair ikeys to the car using both CONSULT PC and special security access card only provided to Nissan/Infiniti dealers.

My friend works at a Car Auction place and his Key guy was able to cut and program my 08 STI keys for me. If I ever need more keys for the G37 I'll hit him up to see if he can do it.

A couple of questions. I know this is a rookie question, but I lost my manual, so is there a way to start the car if the battery is dead in the remote/key? Also, I do not have a spare key so I am looking into getting a second one; where have you gone for replacements? I came across this site 2008 INFINITI G37 key - Keyless remote for INFINITI G37
but then as I read some past threads, a couple people suggested this one from ebay Infiniti Smart Key Prox Remote Keyless Entry Fob Uncut Key Blade KR55WK48903 | eBay

Obviously they still both need to be cut/programmed and the ebay says it does not have a transponder chip. Which do you tihnk would be the better/more cost efficient way to go?

Any input would be great! Thanks!
Did you ever find out why the key battery was draining quickly? I am having the same problem on my 2009 G37 key. I have replaced the battery 3 times in the last 4 weeks ...

The CR2032 can be found at grocery stores, too.

As an FYI, it's the same battery Dell uses in their servers for the CMOS.
