Question Intelligence key battery replacement/other questions

Hey there ladies/gents,
A couple of questions. I've noticed my battery has been draining pretty rapidly on my key, to the point where my car (08 g37S coupe) didnt even register the key when I sat down, and I noticed a little port to the lower left near my leg. I know this is a rookie question, but I lost my manual, so is there a way to start the car if the battery is dead in the remote/key? Also, I do not have a spare key so I am looking into getting a second one; where have you gone for replacements? I came across this site 2008 INFINITI G37 key - Keyless remote for INFINITI G37
but then as I read some past threads, a couple people suggested this one from ebay Infiniti Smart Key Prox Remote Keyless Entry Fob Uncut Key Blade KR55WK48903 | eBay

Obviously they still both need to be cut/programmed and the ebay says it does not have a transponder chip. Which do you tihnk would be the better/more cost efficient way to go?

Any input would be great! Thanks!

If the battery is dead in the key, just put the key in that little slot you're talking about and then start the car and just get your battery replaced whenever you get a chance. I asked a guy at infiniti today and he told me it's 8-10 bux to get it replaced or you can probably just order the battery yourself and swap it yourself.

It's just a wafer battery like you would find for a watch. Should only be 2 or 3 dollars at radio shack or another box store.

This. You can find replacement batteries for around $3 just about anywhere. Wal-mart, Target, home depot, academy sports all carry this battery. I have changed out a few of them. Take a little screwdriver to open the i-key case and check the battery model number at the store to make sure you get the right one. I want to say it's a cr2032 but it might be a cr2016 or something else entirely.

You are right. It's CR2032. Be sure to get a brand name one from a location that rolls inventory often. It's worth the extra money.

Hey guys, i appreciate all of the responses. Now, in terms of a replacement for the actualy UNIT (for a spare) does anyone have any experience with that? Any certain sites to purchase from? Referring back to my first post on this thread, which would be the better option between those 2?? Thanks

It says new and uncut. Still will need to have the dealer program and cut the key, but at least you get savings on the key itself.

That used key from ebay has the following description:
"You are watching on a used OEM 4 button Infiniti smart key remote keyless entry transmitter. It's still in good condition,it comes with a brand new uncut key blade without the transponder chip, pls make sure yours doesn't require the chip before buying it..."
  1. They say the key is without transponder chip. I think you need that to for the remote and/or start to work.
  2. I would guess they took a used key with a cut blade and and replaced the key blade with a blank, who knows the quality, fit, finish, etc

From reading these forums, it seems the cost to program and cut the key might vary by dealer. Best bet is to check with your dealer and/or do a search on this forum to find what other members have reported.

Right, so this might be a stupid questions, but perhaps im missing something, but why would one purchase the unit without the chip when the remote is a key function?

I don't think you are missing anything. More than likely anyone who buys that item won't read the fine print or didn't understand. Only legit need would be like if you had a key with a good transponder, but messed up the case and/or key and you could re-use the transponder from your existing key.

Might the transponder chip be in systems without the pushbutton start? That is, in systems that use the traditional ignition key. If you notice, those with pushbutton start have no lock cylinder to insert a physical key into. Only the receptacle that accepts the fob should the battery go low/die. On the push button models, the key is only used to open the door and lock the glove box. So of course the key blank with the smart key/push button start models would not need any chip in the physical key blade.

I have push-button start and I have lock cylinders in the doors on my 2008 G37s coupe (which is the same vehicle OP has inquired about).

here is some decent info i found on the usage of transponder chips in Infiniti vehicles.

The only authoritative answer would come from Inifiniti, but I'm sure they will tell you to buy the key from them to ensure it works the same as the keys provided when the vehicle was sold. Anything else is a gamble and I would not bet on a $35 replacement, but that's my opinion.
