Oil pan drain plug stripped?
Oil pan drain plug stripped?
So I went to change my oil the other day, got the car on ramps, get to the oil drain plug , get it turned a 1/4 turn. So I'm waiting for the oil to come spewing out...nothing, so I turn again, still nothing. At this point in just keeps turning. Is it stripped ? Hopefully I can get it off with an impact wrench , which I do not own. I have left it be for now, at least till I my new drain plug gets here, in case it is stripped, which it most likely is ? any suggestions ?....hopefully my oil pan threads are ok
Are you saying the plug keeps turning without coming out at all? The oil will (should) only come spewing out once the plug is completely out of the oil pan. Was the plug tight when you started? When you gave up were you able to retighten it? The last time you changed your oil did the plug go in smoothly?
If you can get a screwdriver or a small pry bar under the bolt head while you turn it w/ a wrench (so you can apply outward pressure) you may be able to engage the next row of threads and get it out. If not you'll have to remove the pan and go from there, hopefully pan threads are fine.

An impact on an oil drain plug?!@#
If it's stripped, should turn with little effort. I'd say don't attempt to tighten to drive it someplace. Your oil change may turn into an engine rebuild/replacement.
Do you typically do oil changes yourself or take it to the shop? How recent was the last change?

If you turn it continually and it does not come out, yes, of course it's stripped. How that happened? No idea, but frankly you did something wrong. It happens. Get a new pan, plug and gaskets. Looks like less than $65 total on Rockauto. Even less on Amazon. I would not drive your car until you get it fixed.
