Idle knocking/tapping noise

Hey guys, I have done some recent research and I have been steered all over the board on this topic. When I bought my car it had 27k miles on it. Every so often after driving for a bit, the idle would raise up and a slight knocking/tapping would happen. It was only on idle because when i would drive or rev the motor, it would go away. You can actually see the idle difference on the tach, and I can hear the knocking very slightly in the cabin. When I go outside, I can slightly hear it also. Its when I open up the hood, I hear the tapping knocking sound more pronounced. It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the motor. The weird thing is that when i shut of the vehicle, and turn it back on, the idle is lower and that knocking/tapping noise is gone (almost like something resets). Then when I go drive for a while it comes back. I took it to the dealership when the knocking was going and showed them. They said it was normal for the vq engine. I kinda felt better too when I had a g37 rental car, and it happened one time for that one too. My car now has 72k miles on it. My main concern now is that this knocking sound comes way more frequently almost every time I drive my car.

If anyone could help me and give me ideas to tell the dealership, that would be very much appreciated and helpful. Also, if you have had this and know what this is, is it bad for the motor?

thanks again guys
-shane

I have this same thing. Does it sound like it's coming from under the steering column, close to the pedals? My started after I installed my gen3's so I thought it may be from something being loose on the bumper. If there other suggestions I'm curious to hear other remedies.

I guess a little bit. Does your go away when you shut the car down and restart it? It almost sounds like a thumping.

Here is the exact noise mine makes:

When i shut my car off the noise goes away. When i drive for a while, it comes back again. My car now has 71k on it and is out of warranty. Is this noise bad for the car? And if it is something that needs to be reprogrammed, does anyone know how much it will cost?

I have the knocking noise but it's because of the Gen3 tubing that is touching the engine bay.

Sounds like an engine knock my dude. ... or a spun bearing check your oil level... does the tapping sound get louder as you accelerate? Is it chugging smoke?
