As this platform gets more mature, more and more people go with forced induction. So far, there has been a lot of success and we know that boost becomes very addictive very fast. Usually the natural progression is to build the engine and extract more power out of the car. Arguably, the VQ37VHR engine has proven itself to be a fairly reliable engine and even though we don't require an engine build when customers go FI, it is the natural thing to do when going for big power.

We intend to share this build thread to document what it takes to bring your force fed car to the next level. In this thread, we will be discussing and sharing what is involved in doing so and the supporting mods needed to make 700HP reliably. Stay tuned and enjoy the show.

The Patient

This vehicle we will be using as a case study is a little unique since the engine failed while 100% naturally aspirated with some mild breathing mods. The customer contacted us to do our 700hp package which involves building the engine and installing a twin turbo setup. By using this car as an example it shows that even with simple breathing mods you can still have catastrophic failure.

Phase 1: Engine Removal

Since we are doing a twin turbo and an engine build at the same time, it makes good sense to drop the engine. After pulling the motor, we saw that it was completely unsalvageable. It is truly amazing how much damage that a catasrophic engine failure can cause. The block was completely destroyed, the starter was bent in half and the flywheel bolts were completely sheared off. Remember, this was an NA engine with breathing mods only.

WOW. CRAZY how did that happen? Seems like they got a chain saw that just hacked at that engine. WOW.

I don't think anybody is gonna know exactly what went on inside that motor before it blew up, but, it you know much about the subject, you'd know that "breathing mods" was the first clue. Probably was running lean and detonating, you don't need to be boosted for this to happen.
With all the members here that have done similar things, we may be seeing more of this in the near future.

Drooling for another GTM build. This one should be as good or better than the rest. I would love know how this car was driven on a daily basis. Hard I'm guessing.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it had something to do with the pulley and long tube headers with no tune. The other mods not so much because they make the engine run lean but not so much that everything explodes like a megaton bomb.

 

not sure what year is the car, but I would not be fixing anything older that 2010 in this shape

 

Could have been a number of things to cause the motor to go boom. I have seen the Stillen G3s matched with non-restrictive exhaust components throw lean codes.

 

i would look at the pulley as well, no way an intake and an exhaust should cause that
