HOw to use the auto shifter in manual mode...

Now, I have read all the posts on the paddle shifters, but since I only use one hand on the wheel, I don't see myslef really using it.

However, I would like to really learn how to use the auto shifter in manual mode, without killing the car in the process. I can be an agressive driver, but do not care about gas mileage. I am worried about using the shifter in manual mode and then getting slowed trying to change lanes on the fly on the highway.

Thanks...

First and foremost, I would not reccomend Paddle Shifters for racing. (on or off the track, it is just not as effective.)

If you want to use it for FUN, its quite easy. Take a 10 mile drive around using only the paddles and you'll see how fun it is. First, if your RPM's drop low enough for your car to stall, the car will automatically downshift for you to prevent stalling. This does not prevent you from blowing your engine. Leave it on 1st gear and don't upshift, you will overrev and burn your engines life.

It is simple - taking it to red line will hurt your engine, as, you state, you are a beginner paddle shifter, you will not be the best. Simply put, to drive "hard", drive it to 1k before redline and shift and the "Paddle Lag" (That may be improved by purchasing wires, something like Black Bettys Grounding Wires - free advertisement for you, BB will most likely put you on the exact redline you want to be at. If you want the most powerful spirited driving or perhaps want the vehicle to shift better than a manual vehicle, leave it on DS Mode. DS Mode shifts great. Paddle shifters has a 1/2 second lag to it, making mastering a bit more difficult.

Hope this helps.

You da man Ddot Roq!

However, the OP stated he does not want to use the paddles but rather the auto shifter. As a 6MT driver, I can't help with that but thanks for the gratuitous plug for my product.

Be honest I really enjoy the car just in DS. Throttle is extremely responsive and always quick at a nice RPM. Auto-shifting is gay unless your going from a dig with some 328i beemer.

Just be careful downshifting into 1st in MM it lags pretty bad almost had a few accidents when I first got the car. The rev matching is different than my G35 was took some time to get used to.

There is a lot of range. Personal Preference Really. Don't be afraid to play and learn. It's not that hard to master

This is completely false. The car has a redline for a reason. 7500RPM is the maximum safe speed that Nissan says the engine can operate at. You could drive down the road banging off the rev limiter as long as you want, and provided the cooling system can keep up, you'll never hurt the engine.

The optimum shift point on the G37 is right at redline. the VQ37 doesn't have a big dropoff like some other cars, so for fastest acceleration you'd want to shift right around 7500.

You will not hurt the car by shifting at redline. I drove an entire track day shifting at or above 6500RPM and my car is just fine.

The car has a computer controlling the transmission. It won't let you do anything that can hurt anything. It's not like the 6MT where you could pop the motor by putting it in second at 100mph. Do whatever you want with the paddles, nothing bad will happen. Just remember what works well and what doesn't and you'll figure it out in no time.
