Big thanks to the OP for this DIY. In no ways was this rocket science but it helped streamline the process of getting the grille off to paint it. Thanks again!

 

did this on a 2010 g37x sedan today (midnight grille install), pretty easy if someones helping
once i got all the bolts off, i tried pulling the cover up and away, but i noticed the coolant tank was in the way, so i just removed the left bolt holding it in place, and that was enough to make it move out of the way. While my brother pulled the front bumper out I pulled the cover up and out with no problems (in the middle of the cover it is secured into two prongs so focus on getting the cover out of those prongs as you pull it off) . The radiator hose is clipped right to the bottom of the cover (around 7 clips) and its near impossible to do any real work if these are not unclipped with needle nose pliers. Once removed, set the cover aside (it was still connected at one spot), and remove the 5 screws holding the grille, then push the tabs and pull it out. then reverse the steps;

Hey everyone, just signed up...seems like a great community and an abundance of information here from I've read so far...

So i just bought an 08 g37s coupe/journey with about 38,000 miles...I believe i got a good price for it and it had a clean carfax however after I had couple friends look at it and seeing the pics on this forum, we noticed that he had few parts missing in the front...it seems like it was in an accident.

Anyway, the main thing we noticed that was missing was the radiator cover ....I see everyone had difficulties taking it off but was it easy putting it on?...not sure if I should do it myself as I'm a newbie in any car related work and probably dont have all the right tools.... Should I do this myself?

PS. does any1 know where I can buy 1 and all the necessary bolts, etc.?

 

It's an easy install, just have to get all the wiring clips snapped in prior to the final fit of the cover. You need to get it all together and then get it flat where it needs to be and give it a firm push back toward the engine to clear those two hidden plastic pins, push it down over those pins and you're good to go. Here's a source for the shield, it's part # 6 in the diagram and a bit over $50. Welcome to the site BTW, and congrats on your new G!

Has any of you guys removed the lower plastic mesh on the front bumper? If so, how?

this probably a stupid question but if you are just going to paint the grill could't you take off the radiator cover, tape off the back and put newspaper behind the grill then tape off the front protecting the whole front of the car except the grill, couldn't you just paint the grill then with it still on the bumper?

 

Never a stupid question. You can definitely do that , but remember painting in this way can make the paint uneven and can get overspray on your car's paint which you should avoid if possible. Taking the grille out and cleaning it well, prepping the surface (sanding/scuffing and laying it on a raised and flat surface such as a table) works best to avoid runs or avoid making uneven mistakes.

 

I removed these yesterday. I had the bumper off and they unclog and pop off from the inside of the bumper.

 

Just wanted to say thank you for the DIY instructions! Using the guide, I was able to swap out the chrome grill on my IPL with the midnight black version without breaking anything. I am mechanically challenged so that was something of an accomplishment.

Many thanks to the OP and the other members who improved the DIY by mentioning the problems with the prongs and the coolant reservoir. I just successfully swapped out my grill with the midnight grill in well under an hour. This was with smoke breaks, and not realizing that there were four nuts instead of the two that I could see holding in the actual grill. I love this place!!!!!!!!

What did you paint it with? and what kind of paint did you use, mine need a touch up to black look so nice

 

Is it possible to plastidip my grill on my 2013 g37 coupe without removing the front grill ?

 

Thanks for this...but getting that radiator trim off was a PITA! I cracked the area where the 2 pins are. Oh well no one see's it.

 

I'm about ready to just throw my midnight grille in the trash because I can't get these the radiator cover over these F'ing bolts even with the coolant tank bolts removed.

Things I learned:

remove coolant reservoir
pull shroud up and over two bolts in the middle. I found it was easiest with my fingers underneath where the bolts are, and my palms on the top of the shroud.
You need to remove the thick wire on the bottom. Do this by using a pliers to press in on the sides of the connectors.
Leave the thin wire connected, but make sure you bring it up and over the metal piece that juts out in the center.
