Hey everyone. I have a 2009 g37s manual that in november I noticed my power steering fluid was a little low. I had it looked at and was determined to be a leaky hose attached to the reservoir. It was a very slow leak and didnt wanna spend the $350 shop wanted to replace it so for the next 2 months I would just fill up the power steering fluid once every couple weeks.
This past friday, I replaced both the hoses at the reservoir (not the whole line, just the hose and clamps). The car drove great the next day (about 30 miles). Steering felt great and no hissing sound. Yesterday morning tho power steering fluid was half empty so I confusing stopped it off. Drove about 3 miles and checked again and half empty. I found another leak, but I am STUMPED how this happened. I have circled in the diagram where the leak is coming from. It's a quick leak and it either wasnt there to begin with or it was very slow. It's odd cause it's a different hose?? Did I do something to cause this?
when I replaced the hoses at the reservoir, i drained fluid from reservoir, removed 2 hoses, flushed reservoir with water (didnt dry with blow dryer but i think i got most of the water out), attached hoses back and filled up with dexron vi atf fluid.
Any thoughts about this new leak? Did me fixing a smaller leak cause this one? Thanks!!
Since its pressurized, is it possible I has two leaks and when i plugged the first one, it made the 2nd one worse? I cant think of why else I would have this new big leak?
Mistake #1: oil (hydraulic/ATF/motor/whatever) and water do not mix. You should never have flushed the reservoir out with water. I don't think this is your issue but just some friendly advice.
Did you properly bleed the system after you refilled the reservoir? Any air in the system may cause issues as well.
Is the new leak from a hose or other part of the PS system?
And yes, it is very possible that the leak you fixed helped start another leak. Crap happens. Best advice is to get in there and check all of your hoses/fittings/connections/etc. Just remember if you are replacing hoses, be sure to get the proper type for the job. Not all rubber hoses are the same.
So the new leak is from another hose. I've ordered the hose and will be ready to replace it tonight. Based on how severe this leak is now, I find it hard to believe that the few drops of water or not bleeding it correctly could have caused this issue. Nonetheless, the hose needs to he replaced. I can't find anything on how to properly bleed the power steering, so my question is, how do I do that. I have read the quick procedure for flushing by turning the steering wheel numerous times then emptying the reservoir and repeating 3 times. Would that bleed it to? Or is there another way to do so? Thanks
Again, I doubt air or water caused your hose to fail either, but I did want to point that out. The bleeding procedure from the FSM:
Good luck! Hope you get it all sorted.
