Exclamation What is it and why so expensive?

Hi guys,

My car has been giving noises when accelerating so I took it to the dealership and they said I need to replace the rear shift differential bearings. They quoted 2200 for parts and 700 for labor charges and 200 on top of that for taxes. I have a 2008 Journey coupe. The mileage is about 105k ... Is it worth replacing it or should I just sell the car they said it will get worse and the noise will never go away until I replace the whole assembly. I can't afford it now. Im new to this forum by the way and I hope that some of you guys can give me some good insight on what exactly it is and how important it is that I should hurry and replace it before it's too late (that's what they said)

I have heard of differential bearings, as they are in the rear end. The only reason I see it costing 3100 is if they are replacing the entire unit itself, which is not needed. A simple bearing kit is only $259!

Should you get it done? Very much so! Should you pay 3100 for it? F NO!

Even if you need entire diff replaced - which you don't - you can get a gently used differential for like $300-400. Hell, real LSD unit is like $1000 brand new. It's an hour and half of labor to put it in. Stealerships will always always try to rip you off.

No joke, like everyone said 400 tops for a vsld diff on ebay and to be safe get a whiteline bushing kit for under 100. The most tedious part of the removal and replacement is taking off the rear section of the exhaust and the heat shields. You can do it with a 2 ton jack and some jack stands. The only extra expense would be changing gear oil.

Diff bushings will add a couple of hours of labor but it's a good idea to replace stock ones with whiteline if you are doing differential anyway. Stock bushings are junk.

Because the dealer doesn't sell bushings. They want to replace the entire rear subframe. I had mine done under warranty. Do as suggested, by the white line bushings and have them installed somewhere else...

the dealer's price will always be crazy, but you should get a new g / q loaner for the duration. Buy a used lsd 08 diff from ebay, they are plentiful. Get bushings or don't depending on the condition of the ones on the diff, and have your mechanic replace it. it'll cost you much less. should be around $1k. you will be happy with limited slip...

Could one buy this 2012 VLSD off eBay and put it on an AWD 2011 G37X?

I have no clue about this but I just bought one off eBay recently. I am waiting for the right time to replace it. Maybe after new year since it's time consuming.

Aside to this, can someone tell me the correct size in qts for the "gear oil" that I need to use for the LSD? Doesn't really matter what the brand should be just need to know the qts size.
Thanks guys.
