255/40/19 or 245/40/19 for square setup?

I'm looking to get new tires in the next week and wanted to get some feedback before I buy. I have a few questions...

I have a stock G37x sedan with 19x8.5 rims. I realize that both 245/255 fit on the rim and that the speedometer may be a bit off with the 255s, but what other things should I consider?

I like the idea of having a slightly fatter tire with the 255s, and they're $17 per tire cheaper. I plan to auto-x and track days at least a few times a year. Would the wider tires hinder or help when pushing the car hard?

Lastly, I'm strongly leaning towards General G-Max AS-03 as opposed to Hankook Ventus V12 Evo since I won't be 'tracking' the car too often and like the added tread life of the G-Max. Anyone oppose this logic?

Thanks for your help in advance!

i'm right there with you brotha. See my thread from yesterday. What's pulling you to the Generals? i liked them too. Tirerack says they are loud on the highway.

Yea, I saw you bought the anniversary 19s. Good call on them.

The Ventus are about the same price and seem like a solid summer tire for the price, but I'm not convinced that the extra grip will be worth getting half the tread life compared to the Generals. Maybe someone will convince me that the extra grip is worth it though!

i am running a square set up 19x9.5 with 245/40 all around. no complaints so far but that's because I have an X. are your wheels square as well?

if the wheels are staggered it might look a little weird since the extra tire on smaller front wheels

I'd stick w/ the 245/40/19s always best to stick as close to OEM diameters w/ AWD setups.
The extra 2/5 of an inch in width aren't worth it IMO.

Yes. I do have a square setup in my X. My current tires are 245/40 which are oem size for the 19s. I actually tried to buy the 245/40, but they were out of stock two weeks ago. Looks like they're in stock again, but was still considering the 255/40.

Any comments about auto-x or track day with the slightly wider tire?

I want to go with as wide a width tire within reason for a dd as well. 255 would be a decent upgrade from the stock 18' at 225. I likely will be doing a square 245 though..blah.. too thin imho..

IIRC the XS sedans have square 7.5" rims, if that's the case 245s would be pushing it for a standard mount and they'd definitely be pinched w/ 255s. Here's a good read, about 3/4ths the way down is a handy rim calculator titled "An Ideal Rim Width Calculator"

rm4342, if you indeed do have only 18x7.5, then many tire shops won't even mount anything wider than a 245. Once you select a tire you want on tirerack.com, you can go to specs and see a list of all the tire sizes and appropriate rim width ranges. The recommended max I can go with 8.5" wide rims would be 255.
