Legit question not trying to bash the seller in any way.

I'm actually taking my car on the dyno next week for 600. The place is a genuine "Uprev tuning station," would i need this or this is simply the tool they use to mod my ecu?

When you go a Uprev tuner to get your car tuned they flash a license onto your ECU with their all powerful protuner cable and then adjust the tune; you leave with a pretty much finished product. If at any time in the future you need adjustments to your tune you have to go all the way back to them and redo it. For example if your exhaust throws a CEL that they didn't deactivate you have to make an appt and go back to them to have it turned off. You also don't get a cipher cable to datalog engine parameters or clear codes, etc.

The one I'm selling includes a cipher cable ($200) and the license ($300) and is the version that lets you adjust the tune yourself; you can change variables around and flash the car as many times as you want with their software, and also clear and deactivate any check engine lights that may come on. You can also take this to the tuner and have them professionally tune the car on the dyno if you wanted, they would then only charge you hourly tuning rates, should run $300-400 for a complete dyno tune instead of the $600-700 since they aren't selling you the software license as well. (Plus tax, just saw you're in NY)

At the end when you go to sell the car the version that the shop put on the car is pretty much worthless, but you can resell the tuner version for $500 or so to another DIY'er.

If you have no desire at all to ever tinker with the tuning, monitor engine parameters, pull and clear check engine lights, etc, then its easiest to just get it done at the shop and call it a day, but the tuner version gives you options and flexibility that they don't.

Out of curiosity call the shop and ask what they charge to retune a car thats already been flashed with Osiris, it might be pretty cheap

The tuner is charging you $300.00 for the license, and $300.00 for the labor.

Buy the OPs cable, and the tuner won't need to charge you for the license.

The upside, is that you can take the license off when you sell the car , and then sell the cable with license, for the same price here $600.00.

No one discounts UpRev cables with licenses.

I replied in PM but just to clarify for everyone else:

They do this when you purchase it online so that they can send you the correct ROM file for your ECU and you can get started right away.

OR you can simply connect the cable to your car, load Osiris (download for free on the website) and it will first search for, then display the ECU part #.

You send this to Uprev and they will email you back the correct ROM file for your car, in the off chance that you have a brand new car and it hasn't been cracked yet they will instruct you to dump your ECU (basically download all the code) and email it to them, at which point they will patch that code and reply back to you in a few days with the correct ROM file which they add to the database.

You can get as many base ROM files as you want, they're not etunes, just generic keys to unlock the ECU. This is how its possible for people to unmarry the cable (return the car back to stock and return the license to the cable) and sell them used. Many of the Protuners will also send you base ROM files for free, I remember seeing Vince from R/T post about it somewhere.

Keep in mind that depending on region and production date there are many different versions of the same ECU for the same car.

Seymore4 is correct.

My tuner (Stillen) emailed me the stock rom, and tuned rom.

I have removed and replaced with stock twice before going to the dealer.
