Granted, winter/snow tires (compared to summer only) do allow the car to be drivable in the snow and adverse wintery conditions but it must still be done so with sense.

I am able to take off from a stand still in snow without spinning the wheels so long as I don't exceed the [limited] traction limits. Part of the issue is rwd. Still, I wouldn't trade that for awd for the other 9 months of the year
THIS is a reasonable assessment of snow tires. It bothers me when people have the idea that somehow snow tires mean that you can basically ignore there is snow on the ground. Obviously, snow tires will be better than all season tires on the same make/model, but it always funnels down to the most important factor... common sense and driving according to the weather.

I agree that snows are better, but hardly anyone here uses them, especially if they have AWD or FWD. That's probably because our snows tend to melt within a few days and you are back on dry pavement. I drove my xS for 4 years on A/S tires, including in the mountains, and I never experienced any problems like the OP. I was very impressed with the ATESSA system. The RWD sport models with VLSD do okay too, but nothing like the x models.
