I was sitting in the back seat, letting my son drive...I didn't notice any radio sound coming from the big speaker on the rear shelf.......is this normal, or is the thing disconnected??

Did you check your audio settings? Balance & Fade?

 

I believe that is a subwoofer. Bass only. I could be wrong...

 

I assume you are talking about a Sedan?

 

The car is a sedan......I guess it is a subwoofer...while being technically challenged, my son said the subwoofer coordinates sounds between the other speakers and does not by itself send out any toons.......even when I put the controls fully to the rear, I hear nothing...

 

A subwoofer is strictly for bass, low end tones
check your bass setting and adjust it
if you still don't hear anything then there is something wrong with it
